The GOODS from Ocean Wise

Vancouver, BC | The crisp autumn air won’t be enough to cool down the Vancouver Aquarium on November 16 as the competition among Ocean Wise chefs heats up for this year’s Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown. At this annual showdown, some of the province’s top chefs bring out their finest chowder recipes and compete head to head all in support of sustainable seafood.

Vancouver seafood lovers can grab a spoon and a bowl and sample delicious, comforting chowder all night long. This year, 14 Ocean Wise partners will bring their very best original dishes to the galleries of the Aquarium. Quench your thirst with refreshing craft beer from 14 different breweries as well as Ocean Wise caesars from Walter Caesar and crisp wine from Whitehaven Winery.

At stake is the crown for 2016 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion, selected by a judging panel that samples each contending recipe. Event attendees can cast their vote too, by submitting a ballot to select the People’s Choice award winner.

“Chowder Chowdown has gotten better every year since we began hosting it. B.C.’s top chefs bring their game face – and their mouthwatering chowder recipes – to the table, and foodies and beer fans get their fill,” said Ann-Marie Copping, program manager at Ocean Wise. “There’s always a great energy, because everyone is excited to support sustainable seafood and to root for the exemplary Ocean Wise ambassadors in their own backyard. We’ve seen such great momentum in this city as consumers increasingly care about the health of our lakes, rivers and oceans, and get on board with the sustainable seafood movement.”

The competition will be hot this year, with entries from a number of culinary heavyweights including:

Overfishing is the biggest threat facing our oceans today. The Ocean Wise symbol next to a menu or seafood item is the Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly seafood choice. The Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to ensure they have the most current scientific information regarding sustainable seafood and to help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. The options are highlighted on their menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make ocean-friendly seafood choices.
