Opening Night At East Hastings’ Au Petit Chavignol — Seven Years Ago This Week

by Andrew Morrison | These images were taken on opening night at Au Petit Chavignol exactly seven years ago. The Strathcona/DTES restaurant attached to Les Amis du Fromage lasted a short four years. As I’ve noted before (probably on several occasions), I often pine for its cheeseburgers, raclette, and fondue (oh my god, the fondue!). We previously detailed its construction in a past #TBT (May, 2015), but I was browsing these photos (taken with a very old point and shoot camera) this morning and instantly welled up when I was reminded of the happy fact that my friend Owen Lightly was there that night, too, working the ferrari red meat slicer and getting characteristically giddy over the Jamon Iberico de Bellota (Owen passed away two Springs ago). Miss that boy!

  1. Still miss this superb little spot. Such a shame that it wasn’t sustainable. It’s amazing to me that generic places like Earl’s and other similar chains fill to the rafters, but unique, high-quality “no compromises” spots such as this struggle to fill tables.

I still pine for the best Eggs Benedict ever, the Raclette, Fondue, Warm Chocolate Cookies, Charcuterie… everything!
