On The Hunt For Pretty Dicks And A Local Newspaper That Won’t Fail

by Sean Orr | News that’s fit to print: Postmedia cuts 90 jobs, merges newsrooms in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa. Of course my first reaction was rooted in the depths of schadenfreude, but The Tyee reminded me to “look past the grisly spectacle of Postmedia’s death spiral and talk about what comes next.” Perhaps The Now has an answer: “The news media can be declared another national strategic industry and tighter controls imposed against monopoly ownership”.

And in a “careful what you wish for” moment, VanMag asks Could Vancity Buzz ever dethrone the Vancouver Sun? After I gathered my composure, had a drink of water, and washed the tears of rage away from my face, I read this well written piece by Vancouver Is Awesome founder/editor Bob Kronbauer, who says Vancity Buzz has no competition: “I applaud VCB’s success and hope that they can become a trusted and respected news source but my headline is not meant to be celebratory; we need more diversity in the market.” Amen, brother.

Remember last week when The New York Times was saying that Canada was cool again? Well, now they’ve done an exposé on cauliflower: In Canada, the 8-Dollar Cauliflower Shows the Pain of Falling Oil Prices. Just remember, as bad as food prices are right now, they’ll never be Nunavut bad.

Meanwhile, Underemployed millennial not particularly worried about housing bubble.

Here is a BC Liberal MLA for North Vancouver telling East Van it wants more than just Dead-End’ Welfare Hikes. “Think about it; you too might become a Harvard professor someday…” Holy fucking white privilege much? Because if you’re on welfare you will never be a Harvard professor, which has nothing to do with being on welfare and everything to do with the opportunities that are built into your entire existence (you condescending fuck).

Here’s one white guy who gets it, the principal of the school in La Loche where 4 were killed:

“You take away the land, you take away the traditional livelihoods, you feed them booze, you introduce smallpox in your trade wars,” he said. “We won’t call it genocide, because we’re white guys and white guys don’t do that. That’s just other evil people in the world.” He added, “I began to understand that colonization isn’t something that’s a long time ago, it’s something that’s at work right now.”

Meanwhile, Black Vancouverites get asked “Where are you from?” a lot. No. but really, where are you from?

Lol at Alberta of the day: Conservative Albertans Are Losing Their Shit Over Gender-Inclusive Schools.

Proud to have shared a stage with this guy: Ken Lum on Canada vs. the USA.

My thinking about art and life comes largely out of growing up in a quiet but skittish Vancouver, which has since transmogrified into something I barely recognize as my own. An immense influx of capital has transformed the city into a spectacle that engenders in its visitors feelings akin to the discovery of the secret of poetry, unaware that it is misrecognition of depth for surfaces.

Craigslist of the day: Need male models with nice d*cks (Van).

Looking for male models for my Naked Saturday project. Up to 40 yrs in good shape. No experience necessary – only prerequisite is you have a pretty d*ck. As the title of the project says – must be willing to go naked. Can be anonymous. More details with replies. Please don’t be a flake. Be serious. It’s a fun project. Send photos if you want a fast response. Thanks.

I can’t believe that one’s still up!
