Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

FullSizeRender-(92)
by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. You can also check it out in the Globe & Mail, from our calendar to theirs…and yours!

GOT CRAFT | Skip the trip to the big box stores! The good folks at Got Craft have once again gathered together some of the finest artisans, designers and makers in the city at one location in order to deliver the best in local and handmade quality with mall-style convenience. This year, Got Craft jumps over to the North Shore to set up at The Pipe Shop Building. All that extra elbow room means more makers and more good things to see.
Sat, Dec 12 + Sun, Dec 13 | 10am-5pm | The Pipe Shop (115 Victory Ship Way) | $3 | DETAILS

BEES | Head out to the Richmond Art Gallery on Thursday to talk about bees. Bee-ing Part of the Solution enlists artists, scientists, and beekeepers to discuss why these tiny pollinators are so important, what factors have impacted the size of the bee population, and what peope can do to help ensure their health. Happy bees mean happy plants, and happy plants mean happy people. Bonus: attendees can take home a piece of the current exhibition ”For All Is For Yourself” – an installation of 10,000 “bees” laser cut from handmade seed paper that can be taken home to plant in an an effort to encourage new bee habitats.
Thu, Dec 10 | 5:30-9pm | Richmond Art Gallery (7700 Minoru Gate) | Free | DETAILS

OPEN STUDIO | Want something new and different to wear? Hustle down to Chinatown this Thursday night and take a look at the “statement piece” calibre line-up of goods available in a space shared by jewellers Ali Munn, Catherine Hartley and Wolf Circus. Also a the space will be Explorer’s Press (pins + patches + soft goods) and Loper and Haas (handmade leather goods). Meet the people who make the goods, and maybe have a drink while you’re at it, too.
Thu, Dec 10 | 2-8pm | 303 – 237 Keefer Street | DETAILS

FILM | The Directors cut of Until the End of the World plays The Cinematheque this week. Five hours in length, this version of the 1991 film spares no detail in director Wim Wenders’s vision of a world on the verge of an apocalyptic crash. From The Cinematheque: “In a futuristic 1999, as global panic spreads over the imminent, apocalyptic crash of a nuclear satellite, heedless French hedonist Claire (Solveig Dommartin) meets a mysterious traveller (William Hurt) who is being pursued by bounty hunters and government agents as he travels the world on a secret mission to advance a radical technological breakthrough.” The killer soundtrack (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Lou Reed, R.E.M., Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, Patti Smith – the list goes on), popcorn, and a courtesy bathroom break mid-way through make this an easy, full day affair.
Dec 11-14 | Various times | The Cinematheque (1131 Howe St.) | DETAILS

SILENCE | Vancouver’s nomadic yoga studio, The Social Yoga, is famous for pumping out engaged yoga classes in unconventional spaces, everything from breweries and cafes to galleries and shops. This week they’re teaming up with the super creative Tin Can Studio crew and Lululemon Athletica to set up a temporary mobile meditation studio on Robson. It will offer wigged-out holiday shoppers the opportunity to step out of the mayhem and decompress. Tin Can Studio will be parked in front of Lululemon on Robson & Burrard all day Saturday. Go For it!
Sat, Dec 12 | 10am-5pm | Lululemon (970 Robson @ Burrard)| Free | DETAILS

DELICIOUS |  Grab a kid (if you have one) and head to Granville Island to check out the Carousel Theatre’s musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. It’s the highly entertaining tale of James Trotter, a youngster who escapes the care of his wicked aunts (Spiker and Sponge) by becoming a stowaway in a giant magical peach inhabited by fantastical creatures. “The walls were wet and sticky, and peach juice was dripping from the ceiling. James opened his mouth and caught some of it on his tongue. It tasted delicious.”
Now-Jan 3 | Various times | Waterfront Theatre (1412 Cartwright St.) | $18-35 | DETAILS

EAT LOCAL | The Holiday Farmers Market is on this weekend. Fill stockings, tables, boxes and bellies with local goodness. Not only can you pick up weekly provisions (right now you can expect to see fresh kale, beets, fennel, artisan breads, dried fruits, preserves, cheeses), but with this special holiday edition of the Farmers Market boasting over 75 vendors, there will also be things like beeswax candles, infused honey, candy and baked goods galore, crafts and much, much more. Extra bonus: this is an indoor gig, so no need to juggle a bag and an umbrella.
Sat, Dec 12 | 10am–4pm | Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Dr.) | DETAILS

BIRD COUNT | It’s the annual Christmas bird count this Saturday! Recording bird number is a great way to build a cursory appreciation for the diversity of bird life in the Lower Mainland on a personal level, but your observations contribute to an official bird count that broadens our understanding of trends in local habitat health, species patterns and overall environmental well-being. Participants in the Christmas Bird Count will get a crash course on the basics of bird identification and then will divide into groups to head into the forest for a bird counting adventure. Pack a lunch, as you’ll need the fuel! Pre-register here.
Sat, Dec 12 | 9:30am–1:30pm | Lost Lagoon Nature House (foot of Alberni) | DETAILS

DRAMA | Take a break from mistletoe and Jingle Bells for a night of Jedis and Shakespeare. In the mounting excitement of the release of Star Wards Episode 7: The Force Awakens, Mad House Productions throws down with a live performance marrying the wit and wordplay of Shakespeare with the classic space opera of Star Wars. Having trouble imagining the results? This might be the kind of thing that has to be experienced to be understood, and what better venue than Café Deux Soleils? Count on The Drive to keep it weird on a Saturday night!
Sat, Dec 12 | 8-11pm | Café Deux Soleils (2096 Commercial Dr.) | $5 suggested donation | DETAILS

STOKED | Holiday season pop-ups, markets and craft fairs are definitely a great way to buy gifts made locally by people who care, but they’re also a fantastic means of getting to know people in your community. For an intimate line-up of artists and their handmade wares, stick your head into Dock Lunch this Saturday. Though hardly as big as some of the long established favourites (Got Craft and Shiny Fuzzy Muddy go down this weekend) this gathering of seven vendors still manages to cover an impressive range, offering beautiful leather goodsletterpress cardsvintage clothing, stunning jewellery, and more. Bonus: this is Dock Lunch – a space that can’t help but make one feel immediately at home. I’m really looking forward to this one. See you there!
Sat, Dec 12 | noon-6pm | Dock Lunch (152 East 11th Ave) | DETAILS
