Tofino, BC | Fall brings with it cloudy skies and cooler air, but it’s also an excuse to warm up by indulging in delicious comfort food. Vancouver foodies will have a chance to sample some of the city’s best cold weather cuisine at the Vancouver Aquarium’s annual Ocean Wise™ Chowder Chowdown at the Vancouver Aquarium.

On November 18, 14 top Vancouver chefs will go head to head, vying to have their original, sustainable chowder creation crowned 2015 Ocean Wise Chowder Champion. Event attendees will have their say too by casting a ballot to crown the People’s Choice award winner. The mouthwatering Ocean Wise chowders will be paired with refreshing, local craft beer. Tickets are available here.

“This annual event brings together Vancouver’s culinary heavyweights and seafood lovers, united by their support for sustainable seafood. This year marks the 10 year anniversary for the Ocean Wise program. What began with a small group of partners has now expanded across the country, and we continue to see incredible momentum in the sustainability movement,” said Ann-Marie Copping, Ocean Wise program manager. “Overfishing is the biggest issue our oceans are facing and through participation in events like this the Vancouver community helps to generate awareness, continue the dialogue around seafood sustainability and do their part to spread the message.”

The 2015 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion will be selected by a panel of esteemed judges. This year the restaurants include:

· ARC at the Fairmont Waterfront – Chef Alessandro Vianello

About Ocean Wise™

Screen-Shot-2015-01-08-at-4.47
Overfishing is the biggest threat facing our oceans today. The Ocean Wise symbol next to a menu or seafood item is the Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly seafood choice. Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program makes it easy for consumers to make sustainable seafood choices that ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.

The Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to ensure they have the most current scientific information regarding sustainable seafood and to help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. The options are highlighted on their menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make ocean-friendly seafood choices.

In addition to its website, Ocean Wise also makes available an iPhone application—an easy-to-use app that provides consumers with Ocean Wise restaurants, markets and supplier venues from coast to coast, and a comprehensive list of ocean-friendly seafood options. The Ocean Wise iPhone app is continuously updated with ocean-friendly seafood options and Ocean Wise partners spanning Victoria to Halifax.
