Penticton’s Cannery Brewing Shines Light On Autumnal “Darkling” Oatmeal Stout

The GOODS from Cannery Brewing Company

Penticton, BC | As the dark evenings of fall become longer, people turn to darker and richer beers. The Darkling Oatmeal Stout from Penticton’s Cannery Brewing certainly fits this bill. This flavourful brew is the latest limited release beer in the Artisan Creations series from Cannery Brewing.

Like the other beers in Cannery Brewing’s Artisan Creations series, the Darkling label is an artistic creation designed to match the artistry of the beer. The Darkling name was inspired by a line from Lord Byron’s famous poem, Darkness. ‘The bright sun was extinuish’d, and the stars did wander darkling in the eternal space’. Ross Thompson, Head Brewer at Cannery Brewing explained, “Poetry and beer go hand in hand… The balance and rhythm in both creates a seamless artistry that rolls over your palate and lingers, waiting to be deciphered.”

Thompson continued, “At 5.5% alc./vol. and with 30 IBU’s, our Darkling oatmeal stout balances smooth mouth feel with bittersweet roasted flavours to brighten the blackest of days or the darkest of Lord Byron’s poems. We were thrilled to work again with the very talented Okanagan-based artist and designer Myron Campbell to design this dark yet impactful label. Myron is a professor at the University of British Columbia: Okanagan Campus, a Governor General’s Gold Medal award winner and a true lover of craft beers! We are totally stoked with the flavour profile of this beer and the label design for this Artisan Creation.”

Cannery Brewing’s Darkling is a limited release that will be available in 650ml bottles at private craft-beer focused liquor stores and restaurants throughout BC and at select liquor stores in Alberta until it is gone. It is also available in Cannery Brewing’s tap room by the glass and for growler fills. For a list of private liquor stores carrying the 650ml Darkling bottles, see http://www.cannerybrewing.com/locations/186-darkling-locations.

In addition, two cans of the Darkling will be the featured Brewer’s Choice option in The Cannery Collection mixed six pack this fall, from October to December.

ABOUT CANNERY BREWING

8269660523_34d520e402_b

Located amidst the breath taking scenery of Penticton, British Columbia, our micro-brewery produces individually hand-crafted fine ales and lagers of unmistakable complexity and balance.  This flavour is the result of wonderful combinations of premium quality malted grains and carefully chosen Pacific Northwest hops. Cannery Brewing is the Small Brewery with Big Flavour!

All of our beers are created with carefully selected and scrutinized ingredients.  We use the finest hops and malted barleys and only the finest yeast strains.  Our brews are all natural.  They contain no preservatives and are not pasteurized.  You get a fresh, crisp taste every time.

We brewed our first batch of beer in the Old Aylmer Fruit and Vegetable Cannery in Penticton on April Fool’s Day, 2001.  It did seem like an auspicious day for the start of a brewery that would be dedicated to enjoyment (not to mention the odd practical joke!). In the beginning, we brewed and sold beer in kegs for local restaurants, pubs and clubs.  After that came the wonderful 8.5 litre Party Pigs of beer that flew out our doors. (Our pigs do fly!)

In 2011, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and our 1000th brew! Today we sell our beers in 650ml bottles, 355ml cans, on tap, in Party Pigs and we recently launched a new Growler program. A Growler is a reusable, glass 2L bottle that can be filled at our brewery.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES

Over the years, we have been fortunate to receive a number of different awards at various beer festivals throughout the country. We were thrilled when we won a Gold Medal for our Squire Scotch Ale and a Silver Medal for our Naramata Nut Brown Ale as part of the 2010 Canadian Brewing Awards.
