The GOODS from the Maritime Museum

Vancouver, BC | Join the Vancouver Maritime Museum on October 24th for their first Arctic Gala fundraising event, where guests will experience an incredible evening of food and entertainment from the Arctic surrounding the St. Roch, the first vessel to complete the Northwest Passage from West to East and the first to circumnavigate North America, and throughout the Museum.

The menu (catered by Edible Canada and Peake Catering) will include tastings of exotic northern cuisine such as reindeer, elk, muskox, caribou, Arctic Char and smoked goose breast. Specialty alcohol, including the infamous Sourtoe cocktail, delivered specially from Dawson City, and Iceberg Vodka delivered on a luge track running through an ice carving, will also be on offer.

While roaming the museum after hours, glimpse the magical Aurora Borealis and enjoy live entertainment from the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers who are being flown down from Whitehorse by Air North specially for the event. They will feature storytelling on the St. Roch, traditional dance, and themed audience participation drumming and dancing.

There will also be a photo opportunity with sled dogs and champion musher, Hans Gatt. Spirit Wrestler Gallery Vancouver will be featuring many of their Arctic pieces on display to complete the package.

The entire museum will be opened for this event and something will be happening everywhere!

Guests also have the opportunity to bid on exclusive items in the live and silent auctions, including a 12-day expedition (a twin berth cabin) through the Arctic from Cambridge Bay to Iqaluit, compliments of One Ocean Expeditions (approximate value over US$24,000); two places on the 2016 Ultimate Whisky Dinner Weekend in the Yukon compliments of Edible Canada (value $4,000); a Yukon Aurora package for two including 2-3 night stay in the Yukon (value $4,000); a private catered dinner by Peake Catering in your own residence (value $1,000); a cheese, beer and desert pairing, in your home for 10-15 people from Yukon Brewing (value $450); art work, Cortes Island Sockeye salmon, prized whisky and more.

Claire Martin (meteorologist, formerly with CBC) will MC the event, and Robin Esrock (The Bucket List books) will be speaking about the importance of following your dreams and checking off Bucket List items (thus the transit and Northern Lights experience). Have you ever wanted to travel in the North or truly experience the Northern Lights? Our Executive Director, Captain Ken Burton has just got back off a One Ocean transit of the North West Passage and he said it was incredible!

According to Vancouver Maritime Museum’s Executive Director, Captain Ken Burton “We’ve gone all-out to make this fundraiser one-of-a-kind and extremely memorable. There will be lots of surprises …. you might even arrive to find yourself dusting real snowflakes off your shoulders!”

All proceeds from the Arctic Gala 2015 will support the Museum as we work to preserve the maritime heritage of the Pacific Northwest.

Tickets are $300pp (on sale until midnight October 7 for $250pp) and include all food, entertainment and most alcoholic beverages.

There are only 200 tickets available for this exclusive event, and tickets can be purchased online: www.vmm-gala.com/tickets.

ABOUT THE MARITIME MUSEUM

20299248315_d1c2aa6ec2_b
The Vancouver Maritime Museum thrills all ages with the rich maritime traditions of the Pacific Coast and tells stories of Canada’s ties to the Pacific and Arctic. Discover the world of ship-wrecks and explorers; Canada’s celebrated RCMP schooner St. Roch; Children’s Maritime Discovery Centre; a wide range of permanent and changing exhibits; and the Heritage Harbour.

As a centre for life-long learning, the Museum interprets our ongoing interaction with the sea through exhibitions and programs for people of all ages. Explore the many exhibits on lighthouses, early fur trade, fireboats, Vancouver warships, deep-ocean exploration, coastal and transpacific steamship lines, and so much more.

Step back in time onboard St Roch, Canada’s celebrated RCMP Arctic schooner. Wander the ship’s narrow corridors, where it is still 1944 and you are one of the crew on her second and most famous voyage through the treacherous Northwest Passage. St Roch was the first ship to traverse the Northwest Passage in both directions.

Created to teach and designed for fun, visitors to Children’s Maritime Discovery Centre experience a fun hands-on area dedicated to children and the young at heart. Heritage Harbour features working and classic vessels. The Gift Shop specializes in toys, books, models and RCMP souvenirs. Programming includes events, lectures, and activities for children. Every birthday party is an adventure at Vancouver Maritime Museum and facility rentals are also available.

The Vancouver Maritime Museum is located within Vanier Park just west of False Creek on the Vancouver waterfront & a short stroll from Granville Island. There is also a False Creek Ferry stop at our Heritage Harbour so you can start and finish your maritime adventure in style. We are open Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, until Labour Day when we are closed Mondays and open Sundays 12pm – 5pm.
