Short Film “Font Men” Details How Modern Typefaces Are Designed

(via) Have you ever wondered what goes into the modern, digital construction of a typeface? While the short film Font Men doesn’t get into the technical specifics too much, it nevertheless provides plenty of entertaining insight into the intellectual and idiosyncratic nature of the processes of industry giants Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, whose “Knockout” typeface we employ on Scout in both our brand and headlines. The short doc was made just before the pair split last year. The ensuing bitter lawsuit practically guaranteed that they’ll never again work together, but in their 20 year partnership they were responsible for the design of over 800 typefaces. It’s a slightly voyeuristic thing to watch in the wake of their break-up, but it’s hugely fascinating just the same.
