Vancouver BC | Vancouver’s beloved brunch institution, Café Medina, is set to mark International Waffle Day on Wednesday, March 25 by partnering with local charity Mission Possible through the Mealshare program to provide meals to those in need in local Vancouver communities.

For every one of Café Medina’s signature Belgian Liège waffles ordered on March 25, the restaurant will feed one person through Mealshare, a non-profit initiative that partners with local restaurants to provide meals to the less fortunate.

“We aim to provide sustenance in every way, shape and form, both to our guests and our community,” says Café Medina proprietor Robbie Kane. “Through International Waffle Day, I’m delighted to spotlight Mealshare and give a little something back to the community.”

Beyond the International Waffle Day initiative, Café Medina is already a supporter of the Mealshare program. With the order of each “Le Peameal” bacon and egg sandwich served every day at the restaurant, Café Medina donates a meal back to those in need. Since first partnering with Mealshare last summer, the restaurant has provided 2,873 meals to date throughout the local community.

“When Robbie first presented me with this idea, I thought it made so much sense,” says Derek Juno, VP of Business Development with Mealshare. “Café Medina is famous for their waffles and such a passionate supporter of their community at large, so what better way to celebrate International Waffle Day?”

One could argue that every day is International Waffle Day at Café Medina, thanks to the restaurant’s already celebrated Belgian-style Liège waffles. Made with yeast-leavened dough as opposed to batter, Liège waffles date back to the 18th century and use pearl sugar to create an unmistakably dense and delicious molten caramelized texture.

Whether enjoyed in the restaurant or packaged to-go, Café Medina’s trademark waffles ($3.15) may be accented by 11 different toppings ranging from savoury selections like salted caramel and peach & bourbon butterscotch to sweet-tooth specialties such as milk chocolate lavender, white chocolate pistachio rosewater and quince cranberry compote for $1 each, as well Earnest Cardamom Ice Cream for dine-in guests for $2.

On March 25, waffle lovers are invited to share their Café Medina Waffle Day experience for a chance to win brunch for two at Café Medina. About Medina

CafeMedina-2014-119
Since opening in 2008, Café Medina has carved out a niche as a truly exceptional breakfast, lunch and weekend-brunch destination that effortlessly blends eclectic bistro fare, connoisseur-savvy coffee and sweet nourishment via the city’s best Belgian waffles.
While the name Medina has many interpretations, it was selected for its connotation to “radiant or enlightened city”. Indeed, this unique café quickly shone as one of the city’s most stylish additions, thanks to owner Robbie Kane’s pioneering attitude towards café culture and distinctive brand of enlightened hospitality — an ideal complement for the café’s instantly memorable, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine by celebrated chef Jonathan Chovancek.

As Kane explains it, Café Medina doesn’t simply serve food — he and his staff pride themselves on feeding the soul of each and every guest and providing them with sustenance in every way, shape and form. It’s this signature Medina mystique that has made the café a Vancouver institution, and is the reason its guests keep returning again and again.

After six years in its original location in Crosstown, Kane moved Café Medina to a bright and spacious new home at 780 Richards Street in August 2014. And while the café’s new location boasts a number of upgrades, Kane has also taken great pains to migrate and preserve the same quaint touches, fine details and old-world charm that made the café such a beloved staple of the local restaurant scene in its former site.

The café’s new quarters not only allow for increased seating capacity, an expanded bar, open kitchen, high ceilings and plenty of natural light, but also provides the opportunity to expand the Medina menu to soon offer dinner service, as well as an evening venue for private functions and special events.

Boasting high ceilings, up-cycled lighting fixtures, antique mirrors and traditional deco panel moulding, Café Medina’s expansive dining room offers a truly unique and instantly memorable setting for celebrations, parties and gatherings for up to 60 guests seated or 90 guests reception-style.

Whether it’s an intimate wedding reception or rehearsal, cocktail-and-canapé mingler or a multi-course dinner service, Executive Chef Jonathan Chovancek has custom-designed an array of seasonal menu options all featuring Café Medina’s signature Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.
