LAPD Officer Describes “Skid Row” Similar To DTES

(via) In this StreetWiseLA video posted to YouTube yesterday, LAPD Officer Deon Joseph talks candidly about his take on the inner city’s infamous Skid Row, which mirrors Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in that it has a high concentration of homeless people (1,000+), many of who struggle with mental health issues, drug addiction, and predatory dealers. He calls it “a concentration camp without walls”, and (rightly) pins the blame for the lack of progress squarely on purposeful ghettoization through the concentration of services; the rampant NIMBYism that drives that nonsensical concentration; and the countless blowhards on the extreme left and right of the political spectrum who use the community like it’s some sort of ideological football.
