Company President and Executive Chef Billy Kawaja and CEO Debra Lykkemark heads a group of top professionals dedicated to producing cutting edge cuisine, innovative presentation, contemporary design and courteous service. The award-winning kitchen team was the official caterer for the BC Canada Pavilion in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Games. In 2010, our Beijing operation was the recipient of two international awards for a spectacular four-course luncheon for 120 guests on the Great Wall of China and recently was recognized as the Best Event Caterer in Beijing by China BT MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) Magazine. Culinary Capers Catering and Special Events has been in the business of serving restaurant quality cuisine with unique presentation and superior service since 1986. Our signature event style have won awards and earned us an international reputation, but more importantly, our experience allows us to consistently deliver world-class catered experiences.

Knowledge/Skills

• To obtain a work permit in Mainland China you must have a recognized diploma in cooking such as Red Seal and no criminal record.

• Minimum of 3 years experience as an Executive Chef in five-star hotel/restaurant chain/catering company.

• Experience working abroad is an asset but not mandatory.

• Experience cooking Asian cuisine is an asset but not mandatory.

• Ability to operate a PC computer and knowledge of word processing and excel spreadsheet programs. (Knowledge of Synergy software an asset but not essential.)

• Ability to read, write and speak English fluently. (Ability to communicate in Mandarin an asset but not essential) .

Working Conditions

• New commissary kitchen in Beijing with top of the line Western kitchen, wok kitchen and bakery.

• Air quality in Beijing can be very poor, not suitable for anyone with asthma or allergies that affect breathing.

• Off-premise catering can require travelling and working in adverse environmental conditions such as changes in temperature, dust and excessive noise.

• Candidates must be physically fit, no back problems, able to work for up to 10 hours a day on their feet and able to lift 50 lbs.

• The standard work week for this position is 50 hours. During peak seasons there will be extra hours, which can be banked for use during the slow seasons.

• Working in China can be very challenging and very rewarding. We are looking for someone with stamina, a can-do attitude that is ready for an exciting adventure.

Compensation

• Salary can range from US$ 6000 to US$ 8000 per month, depending on experience.

• This position is a three year contract.

• The probation period is 120 days.

• An apartment allowance of US$ 800 will be over and above the salary.

Culinary Capers Catering is a full service off premise catering company that has been serving the greater Vancouver area since 1986. We cater to a complete range of clients serving every type of function including working lunches, elegant cocktail receptions, distinctive corporate events, formal weddings and company barbecues.

To complement our catering services, Culinary Capers has developed three divisions of the company which offer a full range of optional services for clients. Best of the West BBQ Catering provides an affordable alternative to customers hosting large parties and picnics on a limited budget. PartyArt Design is an independent operating division that offers décor, floral and overall event design. Culinary Cakes produces wedding and specialty cakes and signature confections for events.

Company CEO Debra Lykkemark heads a group of top professionals dedicated to producing cutting edge cuisine, innovative presentation, contemporary design and courteous service. Culinary Capers creative team has been honoured with many national and international awards by the special events and catering industry. In 2009, the company was the recipient of the prestigious International Achievement in Catering Excellence (ACE) Award. Accolades in 2011 include The Special Event Gala Award for Best Off-Premise Catered Event and the Chef of the Year Catie Award for our Executive Chef Margaret Chisholm from the International Caterers Association. This celebrated award honours Chef Margaret’s 16 years of leadership with our company, the community, and the culinary industry.

Culinary Capers has catered three Olympic Games. During the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Culinary Capers executed Olympic events for high profile clients, including NIKE, Coca Cola, NBC, Royal Bank of Canada, Shaw Communications, VANOC and Sochi 2014 House. The company was chosen as the exclusive caterer for the BC Canada Pavilion in Beijing in 2008 and for BC Canada Place during the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy in 2006.

Excited about the opportunity for growth in the Beijing market, the company opened a sister company, Culinary Capers Beijing Catering and Special Events, in 2008. In 2010, our Beijing operation was the recipient of two international awards for a spectacular four-course luncheon for 120 guest on the Great Wall of China and most recently was recognized as the Best Event Caterer in Beijing by China BT MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) Magazine. In 2012, Culinary Capers Beijing opened SWITCH! Café which features the same fresh modern cuisine, only in a restaurant setting, that has allowed Culinary Capers to garner an international reputation.
