SCOUT LIST: 10 Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now & Next Week

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

Pop-Up | There’s a cool little pop-up in Gastown that you should fit in to your shopping schedule. It’s called The Found and the Freed, and if you’ve never been to one of their sales before, they’re pretty awesome. It’s brought to you by a couple of great gals who source vintage and antique artifacts from all over, and then dust them off, fix them up and bring them to a convenient location for you to sift through (photos here). Be warned: items will fly out the doors, so don’t sit on whatever you fancy for too long.

The Acorn | Totally stoked to report that The Acorn is opening doors this week. Located at Main and 24th, the new (incidentally) vegetarian restaurant will be kicking things off on Tuesday and we’re betting that they will be busy. Make plans. We paid them a visit during a menu dry run on the weekend, and it looks/tastes amazing.
Tuesday, July 2 | 5pm | 3995 Main (formerly Cipriano’s) @24th

The Documentary Tradition | There’s a Documentary Photography show on at Emily Carr right now that sounds very interesting: “As storytellers, photojournalists and documentary photographers create images, both still and moving, that record the history of our culture, evoking the momentous and the everyday circumstances of contemporary life. In recent decades, Photography, Photojournalism and the Documentary tradition have been transformed by digital technology; the dissemination of these images has radically increased to feed new modes of consumption.” Check it out.
Saturday, July 7 – Sunday, July 15 | 9-5 | Emily Carr’s Concourse Gallery | Free | Details

FUSE | Make your way this weekend to the VAG for FUSE. Take in art, music, live performances, DJs and eclectic gallery tours. This time around, FUSE is going by the theme of Again and Again and Again. Expect ‘repetitive actions, never-ending stories and a Summer Night that goes on and on and on…’ Sounds cool to me.
Friday, July 6 | 8pm–1am | Vancouver Art Gallery | $25 | Details

Tribute | Remember the Bill You Murray Me? exhibition at the Fall Tattoo Gallery? It was all kinds of awesome. Well, the same people that pulled that show together have done it again. Get ready for the Zig-a-zigallery, a Spice Girl inspired art show. Opening night (Saturday) will be filled with “sparkly, girl powered tributes, union jack dresses, track pants and icy stares.” DJ, booze, and Spice Boys as well. Sounds fun.
Saturday, July 7 | 7pm-1am |The Fall Tattoo Gallery | 644 Seymour | Free | Details

Gig | American musician Justin Townes Earle is playing at the Rio Wednesday night. This will be a good show, and it’s the 4th of July. Let’s show this fine, visiting American musician some quality Vancouver love!
Wednesday, July 4 | Doors 8pm / Show 9:30pm | Rio Theatre | $25 | Details

Launch | I’m so excited for the This Is East Van book launch and exhibition at the Interurban Gallery on Saturday night. It’s going to be such a phenomenal show. So many great people will be there to celebrate the second book, and contributors are showing some of their work on the walls. Jeremy Schmidt will be DJ-ing all night long and there will be wine and beer available for purchase. I really can’t think of a better way to spend this Saturday night. Maybe grab a cocktail at the Diamond before or after? Books ($45) available as soon as doors open (first come first served, and cash only). All images in the show will be available for purchase at $160 each with $150 of the proceeds going to the photographer and $10 the Gallery (which is a non-profit/volunteer-run community art space). The official book launch after-party will be at Fortune Sound Club. Get in for free with a TIEV stamp. Stoked!
Saturday July 7 | 7pm | Interurban Gallery | Details

Score | Don’t miss out on the Strathcona Garage Sale this weekend. This is no piddly little gig with headless barbies and VHS tapes. This garage sale will be full of good stuff: clothing, furniture, books, everything. Last year we picked up some fine picnic blankets and a whack of good reading. As in past years, the sale will take place mostly on Hawkes Avenue, focusing on the 700 and 800 blocks. It will also extend westward along the park side of the 700-block of East Georgia Street. Hit the Wilder Snail for coffee and kick back in MacLean Park afterward.
Sunday, July 8 | 9am-1pm | Hawkes Ave, Strathcona

Cottonwood | Another great reason to spend a little time in Strathcona on Sunday: The Cottonwood Gardens Friends and Family Day! There will be a plant sale, demos, clever gardeners giving advice and answering questions, bees, live music, good food and generally awesome people. A stroll through a community garden is always a good idea, so get on it.
Sunday July 8 | 11am-3pm | Malkin Street and Raymur Ave (Strathcona Park)

Bard on The Beach | The Merry Wives of Windsor takes the stage at Bard on the Beach. This updated version of Shakespeare’s (1602) comedy is set in 1968 Windsor, Ontario. “English ex-pat Sir John Falstaff is hunting for a romantic solution to his money troubles. He sends an identical love letter to two wealthy local housewives, hoping to seduce them and enjoy their fortunes – with no clue that the two are best friends. Neither has any intention of cheating on her husband, but together they lead Falstaff on while plotting their hilarious revenge.” Shakespeare on a Vancouver beach in July. Kinda got to do it, right? Also, Falstaff!
July 3, 4, 5, 7 | 8pm | Vanier Park, Kits Point | Details
