SCOUT LIST: 10 Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now & Next Week

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

Wine | What were you planning for your Tuesday night? Pretty much nothing? You deserve better than that. Desert Hills Winery is at Salt Cellar this week. Slip into the beautiful, softly-lit cellar under Blood Alley’s Salt Tasting Room for an evening of wine, charcuterie and a little bit of first-hand knowledge from the winemakers themselves. Next up is Stoneboat Vineyards (June 26), and take it from us: those guys are all kinds of awesome.
Tuesday, June 12 | 7pm | Salt Cellar | $40

Opening | The Ayden Gallery is opening a new gig this week: new works by Ronan Boyle and The Dark. Goes down Friday night. Since you’re in the neighbourhood, head to the Keefer Bar for a pre or post-opening cocktail and wander the Chinatown Night Market, too (if you like to take pictures, head to the top of the parkade opposite The Keefer. It offers killer views!).
Friday June 15 | 7pm | Ayden Gallery (88 West Pender (2nd Floor International Village) | Details

ReThink | The City of Vancouver, Gen Why Media, and the Vancouver Design Nerds are joining forces to lead a forum designed to help the Mayor’s Task Force on Housing Affordability set out its goals and priorities. Big undertaking. Important stuff. Get involved. Head to The Hive. Registration is required fro this event, so do that here.
Friday, June 15 | The Hive 128 W Hastings | Free | Details

Fish | Pack up and head for a campground near a lake, because it’s B.C.’s Family Fishing Weekend. Score a free three-day fishing licence compliments of the Provincial Government and kick back to enjoy a quiet afternnoon of fishing at one of the province’s tens of thousands of lakes and non-tidal streams without forking over the dough (or getting in trouble for not forking over the dough). Personally, I’m in favour of the catch and release approach. The sitting and waiting is where the fun is.
June 15-17 | lakes and non-tidal streams in your neighbourhood | Free | Details

Walk | The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is offering another one of their informative walks this Saturday. Explore the ‘other’ Chinatown with Vancouver historian John Atkin (Commercial & Franklin). John will brief you on the industrial area that was once home to a vibrant Chinese business district of shops, hotels, and a Buddhist temple. These walks sell out quickly so don’t wait on it. Register for this and other upcoming walks here. UPDATE: SOLD OUT
Saturday, June 16 | 10am | Chinatown | $12 | Details

Flour up | Out at UBC Farm this week you can learn all about bread making with artisan baker Florin Moldovan. Florin is teaching a beginners bread-making workshop that will not only leave you with an understanding of the basic techniques required to make bread at home, but will also cover how to create the perfect loaf, a backgrounder on the grains that form bread, and some of the cultural lore of baking bread.
Fri & Sat, June 15/16 | 6-9pm | $30 | UBC Farm, 6182 South Campus Rd | Details

Get Personal | The East Side Culture Crawl Society is hosting another of their series of intimate studio visits with Crawl artists this Sunday. This month, the Crawl presents an afternoon with Sculptor Sandra Bilawich. Join a small group of other art enthusiasts for a personally-guided tour of Sandra’s studio space and work. What a great way to get to know the artist and their process! Pre-registration is required for this tour. Get sorted here.
Sunday, June 17 | 1pm | Location provided upon registration | $5 (refreshments provided) | Details

Community | If it turns out to be warm and sunny on Saturday night, you might want to pack up a picnic basket, grab a blanket and hit Strathcona’s McLean Park where there will be an outdoor screening of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. McLean Park really is one of the best parks in the city and Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katherine Hepburn will only make it that much better.
Saturday June 16 | after sunset (9ish) | MacLean Park

Chickens | Like the idea of fresh eggs? Tired of rearranging your weekend in order get to the Farmers Market only to find that they are sold out again? Maybe it’s time to consider having chickens at home. Get the scoop on what’s involved at a workshop with Vicki Baker. Vicki will fill you in on where to source your hens, what to do about pest and disease management, how to create a good habitat for the little birds, and how to keep them happy in the winter. Basically everything you need to know about raising chickens in the city!
June 16 | 1-4 pm | 14th Ave (between Clark and Woodland) Exact address will be emailed to participants | $39  | Details

Ride | Velopalooza is on. This year there are 124 events scheduled over two weeks. Highlights of week one include the PD’s Hot Shop collectable bike swap, winery tours, water gun bike wars and, for the more daring among you, a ride to La Charcuterie Delicatessen (home of the Sandwich Nazi). There really is too much going on to list here. Skip over to the Velopalooza website to take a look at the full line-up.
