Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

ATLAS SOUND – “Mona Lisa” – Parallax (4AD)

This is as close as we get to a “Walkabout” type of track from Bradford Cox’s new record. While it’s not as immediately accessible as Logos, this album is a fantastic slow burner that haunts your dreams. Look at the picture of Bradford on the front of the album. What do you think it means?

The Playlist

THE BEETS Let the Poison Out (Hardly Art)

The Beets are great because they hail from Queens instead of stupid Brooklyn. Their new album is a natural progression from their previous efforts. Fun, clever, jumpy 70’s punk rock jams with acoustic guitars and large tom drums. They also have my favourite cover art of the year.

WU LYF Go Tell Fire to the Mountain (Lucifer Youth Foundation)

Hard to pull off the simultaneous yelly and whispery vocal, but the Wu Lyf dude does it well. Vaguely Animal Collective with a punkier side to ‘em. These guys are wildly inventive and I dig it.

CASS MCCOMBS Humor Risk (Domino)

The Superman of Sad is back sooner than I expected, and just in time for the cruddy weather he so aptly soundtracks for this part of the year.

WOODEN SHJIPS West (Thrill Jockey)

Been openly worshiping Black Sabbath lately (who, by the way, just reunited). I guess when you hear a new record you enjoy it’s good to go back and listen to their influences. So what I’m saying is, the new Shjips record is heavy and proggy but also a little krauty. Rad ass.

HIGH PLACES Original Colors (Thrill Jockey)

High Places return for a more danceable affair on their 2nd full length, this time on Thrill Jockey (interesting choice).

JENS LEKMAN An Argument with Myself (Secretly Canadian)

What the…?!?!? This is weird! I’m thinking, like…tropical Disney cartoon movie? But Jens’ sultry voice is still firmly intact, echoing the Paul Simon vocals of decades past.

The Gig

Sunday NOVEMBER 20 – Death From Above 1979 @ Commodore

So sick. DFA79 reunites for a whirlwind tour of North America. One of the best live bands of their generation, the hard-hitting duo are sure to break some hearts in the No Fun City this month. Anyone know if a reunion album is in the works? Haven’t heard. Don’t miss this show, guys.
