Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Zulu Records’ 2nd annual storewide garage sale goes down Saturday May 28th from 9:30am to 7:30pm. Go rummage, go scour, go hunt for the year’s worth of buried treasure! CDs, LPs, 7”, weird sh*t, posters, and all sorts of other ultra cool Zulu stuff…at GARAGE SALE prices! Bonus: Bummer High will be playing in the store at 6:30pm. Don’t miss it!

But back to the task at hand…our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

RELIGIOUS KNIVES’ “The Message” — Smokescreen (Sacred Bones)

Every time we get a new Sacred Bones release in, I’m drawn in by the cover art. Always been a sucker for labels that have uniformed graphic design; David Correll is their in-house designer and really nailed the vibe for the mostly-psych rock underground label based out of NYC. OK, enough art talk!—this band slays as hard as the rest of their label, which counts Zulu favourites Moon Duo and Blank Dogs as members of the Bones brigade. RK’s last LP was called The Door, and I liked it OK, but I really love this new one. Heavy guitars, heavy organs, heavy drones, heavy lyrics. Not for the faint of heart!

The Playlist

OKKERVIL RIVER – I Am Very Far (Jagjaguwar)

Lots of people asking when this one’s coming in – ask no more! It has arrived. Is Okkervil River supposed to be dancey? Did Roky leave Will with a psychotic taste in his mouth? Or just a psychedelic one? Let’s listen in…

ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI – Moment Bends (V2)

These guys just won’t quit! Australian hyperprogtwee band’s fourth LP is dope. I remember thinking when Fingers Crossed came out that there was no way they could keep up the pace—I felt winded after each listening session, but here we are eight years later, and they’re still pumping out the jams. Weird album cover.

DANGER MOUSE & DANIELE – LUPPI Rome (EMI)

AWESOME. All you need to know: It’s a fake Spaghetti Western soundtrack with a bunch of Jack White & Norah Jones duets. Danger Mouse and Dan Luppi produced it. The tunes are absolutely evocative of the films they’re aiming for. A+.

REATARDS – Teenage Hate (Goner)

Sick sick sick. At the height of their game The Reatards were unmatchable. I had the pleasure of seeing Jay open for the Black Keys several years ago. The Keys BARELY survived and we all wondered why the ‘Tards weren’t headlining their own show. Sorry I’m getting all nostalgic – this is a sweet collection of their first few tapes.

NAKED ON THE VAGUE – Twelve Dark Moons EP (Sacred Bones)

If Sacred Bones was a football team, Naked On The Vague would be its halfback. I’m going to let you do the math on that metaphor, but in the meantime check out their creeptastic new EP. Staff favourite.

THEE OH SEES – Castlemania (In The Red)

Living legends. You know the deal here. It’s their one billionth album and it is as good as the last 999,999,999 ones. How did Mr. Oh See get so good?

BELONG – Common Era [VINYL ONLY] (Kranky)

I’ll listen to anything with the Kranky insignia on it. Probably get my Most Trusted Label award, just edging out Not Not Fun and Olde English Spelling Bee. Belong is a great band from the Big Easy. Super pretty guitar noise jams. Try headphones!

R.E.M. – Three [RECORD STORE DAY] [7” COLLECTION] (Warner Bros.)

Another head scratcher. The head scratcher being that this thing hasn’t sold yet. I’m going to write about all the vinyl from Record Store Day until it’s gone. This should NOT be on the shelves. Excellent package of the first three singles from Collapse Into Now AKA their newest album AKA their best album since Automatic For The People.

THE FRESH AND ONLYS – Secret Walls (Sacred Bones)

What is it about psych rock that suits Vancouver so well? These homies will have a hundred beds to sleep in whenever they play the No Fun City. Total girlfriend stealers. Rad stuff though!

JOE LALLY – Why Should I Get Used To It (Dischord)

Why should you ask questions in your album titles. Why shouldn’t you use proper punctuation. Because Joe Lally was in Fugazi we’ll let him off the hook. Because this record is off the hook we’ll let him off the hook.

The Gig

Friday MAY 27 – SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS – Malkin Bowl

The weather has been beautiful lately and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the summer than by watching the lovely Ms. Jones at the Malkin Bowl. I haven’t had the opportunity to see her live show yet so I’m absolutely amped about this one. Add to the equation Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and you’ve got a very very chill evening on your hands. Get your best duds on and close your May out in style. I’ve tried using the term “duds” to several co-workers and they’ve never heard it before. That is a thing, right.
