Tea & Two Slices: On Harper’s “Secret Weapon” And So Much For The Greenest City

by Sean Orr | Stephen Harper’s secret weapon: low voter turnout. But the dysfunctional electoral system is really an excellent wingman. It’s a one-two punch, like the Sedins.

Federal Parties Must Respond to Death Threat Against Canadian Citizens by Israel’s Prime Minister. Wow, that sounds really serious. But it’s really weird that I couldn’t find anything in the Canadian news about it! I did see that The Sun published the identities of those teenagers who killed that teenager, so that’s good, right?

Rally by unionists at Peace Arch Saturday: What’s your take on stripping right to strike? I can’t believe you are even asking – with a straight face – what people think about taking your rights away. Hey media, we’re going to take away the right to freedom of the press. What do you think of that?

TransLink tests lower Golden Ears tolls. Lowering fares to lure drivers and raising bus fares to pay for it? Hmm. So what in fact happens is that bus riders pay more for saving emissions, while drivers pay less while creating emissions? Got it. Oh, and just so we’re clear, we live in the Greenest City™.

Miracle on Hastings street. A grassroots renaissance of spirit and community on the much beleaguered thoroughfare? No silly, a soccer game.

Hockey Luvin Homos turfed from Canucks game. Oh man, I really want to jump all over Rogers Arena for this one, but homo is one of the trickiest words in the modern lexicon. In this instance, the Hockey Luvin’ Homos couldn’t prove that the word wasn’t being used maliciously as an epithet directed at other people rather than a celebration of themselves. I suppose they could have proven the latter, but…

‘Digital Natives’. Wow! “Riot 1492” is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time.

  1. Credit and blame where it’s due. I’m not certain how much input the city of Vancouver had into the construction of the GEB. The analysis of the net inpact is sound though.

  2. That’s pretty much my point. Translink goes bankrupt providing Skytrain to the suburbs/private airport PLUS 2 brand new bridges across the Fraser. The BCLibs gutted Translink and appointed a bunch of lawyers and diamond mine ceos to overrun our region. It’s absurd. The whole Gateway Project contravenes GVRD’s own Livable City Strategic Plan. Yet if the suburbs had monied up decades ago with a vehicle levy we wouldn’t be here. Instead fares go up, and we still can barely get between Mount Pleasant and Strathcona.

They’ve been talking about a tourist street car for a while now but so far nothing. And look at the resistance Gregor gets for putting in separated bike lanes. AND just now, after all these years, they’re putting turnstiles in the Skytrains! I mean, it boggles the mind. Still no rapid transit down the broadway corridor which they could have afforded if they used light rail to Richmond. OK I’m just straight up ranting now. Sorry, thanks.
