A no messing around guide to the coolest things to eat, drink and do in Vancouver and beyond. Community. Not clickbait.

Scout List: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Of The Next Little Bit

IMG_2416

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit.

The Scout List is our carefully considered first rate list of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

On Friday

Hulk Hogan is in town. It’s his Not Quite a Senior Citizen Tour. If you’re  a fan, you likely know where to hook up with tickets. If you’re not – now you have an explanation for the a sudden influx of aging body builders in Coquitlam…oh wait.

L’Abattoir opens. Andrew is working it on the pass station. He’ll be wearing a tie, so there’s that. Word is those working the door are cooling it for volume, so tables might be rare. Worth pressing your face against the glass for, for sure.

Opening reception for the On Collections exhibit at Emily Carr. Air conditioning and art = smart way to spend a Friday.

Folk Fest begins and everything points to it being a pretty amazing way to spend a warm summer Friday night. We’ve been sinking our ears into the line up and their music and we’re justifiably stoked.

If Folk Music isn’t your thing, consider a slow wander through the Chinatown Nightmarket followed by a drink on the lounge-like patio of The Keefer (try the Opium Sour).

The Good The Bad And The Ugly is this week’s midnight movie at the Rio. You just can’t go wrong with Clint Eastwood…

On Saturday

If you’re in to starting your Saturday bright and early, consider the walking tour that teaches you all about native plants of the old growth forest. Better than coffee, but they allow coffee drinkers so it’s even cooler.
July 17 | 7:30-10:30 am | Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve (North Van) | $7.50

If crack-of-dawn doesn’t appeal, consider this slower start: grab a coffee at JJ Bean on Main and head up the hill for some clothes shopping for boys and girls. Eugene Choo invites you to their superfine market (10am – to 3pm) in the parking lot behind their store. Vendors like Heyday, Sunja Link, Banquet, Daughters of Dawn, Solis, Lisa Miki, Flower Factory and Dalhaus will be there, and so will the Rumble Fish taco truck. Tacos Rule, and so does Eugene Choo.

Also on main – The Mile Long Jam. Musicians will line the streets (about three per city block) from Main Street the SkyTrain station all the way up to 25th.

The Kensington Skate Park is now officially open, so rip that up as well.

There is a flea market going down at the Croatian Cultural Centre. Killer bargains on things you don’t need but you absolutely must have. Bring a float, ’cause Interac is retail, and this ain’t that.

It’s summer, so there’s always baseball. Hit the Slo Pitch For Kids softball tournament at the Riverway Sports Complex in Burnaby. Sounds about as exciting as a bag of nails, but there are three really good reasons for you to do this:

1. Huge beer garden sponsored by Red Truck. Yes, please.

2. Good food from the likes of The Twisted Fork Bistro, Me and Julio, Hell’s Kitchen, The Flying Tiger, The Dundarave Fish Market, The Gramercy Grill and The Beerbrats Sausage Company.

3. All profits from the tournament go directly to the BC & Yukon chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Super win!

Heritage Vancouver throws down with yet another one of their entertaining and informative walking tours – this time of Chinatown. Leading is Larry Wong, public historian of the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of B.C. and vice-president of the Vancouver Historical Society. The real deal…
July 17 | 10 am | Millennium Gate (Taylor & W. Pender) $15 | Find out more…

An outdoor movie (Kung Fu Panda) screening in Killarney Park – don’t forget blankets and bug spray. Details.
More Folk Fest.

And Shapes Stars Make and Lakefield play the Biltmore. It’s gonna be a good gig.

Friday sounded pretty sweet, right? And Saturday had some pretty good things to offer too. But Sunday? Sunday has some REALLY cool stuff going down.

Weiner dog race at Hastings Racetrack. For real.

We’ll be feasting at Outstanding in the Field up in Pemberton. Check this Scout footage from last year. Crazy fantastic.

Also, who doesn’t love the Powell Street Festival? Help support it by attending “An Evening Of Sake & Savouries” at Hapa. Because who doesn’t love Hapa? Great combo. Four different sakes, one plum wine and pairings from the Hapa Izakaya kitchen. More information at www.powellstreetfestival.com.
July 18 | 6 pm | Hapa  Izakaya – Robson| $60

Into next week:

Outstanding in the Field Moves to UBC! You cant find a better thing to do with your Monday night. I promise. Check it out.

Good places to buy locally grown produce from good people! In season this month: luscious salad greens, green onions, radishes, shallots, spinach, sprouts, tomatoes, apples, delectable rhubarb, fresh strawberries. dips, sunflower sprouts, crepes, goat and cow’s milk cheese, yogurt, eggs, and an inspiring array of bedding plants, beautiful flowers and, in some cases, fresh pasta from Campagnolo (woot!).

  1. Thanks for mentioning the Lakefield / Shapes Stars Make show that’s happening tonight. It’s an early one, so make sure you’re there before 8:30pm. That, and it’s only $6 – like the olden days!
