It’s Official: The Cannery Will Close After The 2010 Olympics…

It’s too bad. Just the other day I received an email from someone asking if we’d link to an online petition organised by Cannery staff, asking the Port Metro to extend the lease of the venerable waterfront restaurant. I was hoping to get it up, but it now looks like it wouldn’t have done any good in any event… From the Vancouver Sun:

The east Vancouver waterfront operation knew it had to move from its current location after the Games but was unable to find a new home. Port Metro Vancouver had deliberately extended the restaurant’s current lease past the 2010 Games so it could benefit from the increased business.

The port decided three years ago the restaurant could not carry on at its present location because of the need for increased port security.

The popular restaurant has operated on Commissioner Street since August 1971. Its unique location, in the heart of a bustling harbour, and food and service quality have made it a longtime favourite with locals and tourists.

It seems a little counter-intuitive to keep it open during the Olympics if it’s such a security risk, but the world (and Port Metro Vancouver) works in mysterious ways. All the same, what a bummer. I hope that everyone who works there is able to find work by April.

  1. Sad to hear about this. Silly and stupid reasoning. We looked forward to a visit at this restaurant everytime we go to Vancouver. Service and food were exceptional. Beautiful views. We will not be going to the Olympics!!
