Jean-Christophe (JC) Poirier and his Kitchen Table Restaurants team (Pourhouse, Pizzeria Farina, Ask for Luigi and the upcoming St. Lawrence) have opened up the newest member of their family. Joe Pizza is a casual counter service restaurant featuring high quality artisanal Roman Style Pizza for dine-in, takeout and delivery.
Joe offers a simple on-line ordering service for pizza by the half-slab or full slab. Guests can also order slabs in store or come in for just a piece (or two). Joe’s rotating menu features pizza with traditional as well as slightly less traditional toppings. The food menu also includes salads and soft serve ice cream by the cone or cup.
On the libations side, Joe features local craft brews on tap by the glass or by the pitcher from breweries like Brassneck, 33 Acres, Strathcona, Strange Fellows, Hoyne and Sunday Cider. There are also red and white wines by the glass along with glass-bottled soft drinks and fresh cold pressed apple juice. Joe Pizza also has an exciting Happy Hour special every day from 4pm – 6pm – your choice of one square and a Good Company Lager for $6.99. Joe loves social gatherings and has created a special Communal Table that can be reserved for larger parties anytime during open hours. Groups can order ahead to ensure slabs of pizza are fresh and hot when they arrive. Guest will also be able to enjoy their pizza on the patio this summer.
What is Roman Style Pizza?
Roman Style Pizza is typically baked in large rectangular trays, it is sold by the whole pie and is well known for its ability to be purchased in the form of square slices typically sold by weight or by the piece. J-C found inspiration when he visited Gabriele Bonci’s restaurant, Pizzerium in Rome. He developed a dough using advanced bread making techniques and high quality flour. This style of pizza requires time – 72 hours of fermentation – but it is worth the effort. The team has always respected tradition as a philosophical start, but never relies on it completely. This is Roman Pizza through Joe’s eyes – think of it as a love letter to the originators of traditional Roman pie.
Joe Pizza is pizza’ al taglio’ through our eyes – a simple version of traditional pie that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing in Rome. We’ve created a place that is casual, fun and meant to please. – J-C Poirier
What’s in a Name?
It’s simply Joe Pizza, as in first name “Joe”, last name “Pizza” (not Joe’s Pizza). It’s meant to be fun and unpretentious, and easy to remember. While the pizza is very serious, the accessibility of the product, the room and style of service speak more to a playful and carefree spirit. Joe Pizza is just a regular “Joe”. She/he likes things that are simple and real. It’s a reminder that in the midst of today’s instant gratification and information overload, there doesn’t have to be a big story or another educational platform to help you understand what you are eating and what it all means. Take a break for a moment and just enjoy something honest and simple that happens to be really, really good – both for your stomach and your soul. IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE
