Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week
October 31, 2011
Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…
The Track
REAL ESTATE – “Green Aisles” – Days (Domino)
Track of the year candidate. Been waiting for quite some time now for the follow-up to Real Estate’s self-titled debut. Days is a superb record. I can’t put my finger on how they improved on the original. The formula hasn’t changed much – lazy (in a good way) vocal melodies, reverb-soaked guitars that literally every buzz band utilizes, and breezy guitars combine to create a sum worth way more than its parts…is that how that expression works? What I’m saying is this: I love the new Real Estate album. Read more

FEIST – “The Bad In Each Other” – Metals (Arts & Crafts)
Leslie could sing over anything and I’d melt. The sludgy, grinding driver of an opener on her new LP is a great refresher to “remind” us (heh heh) that she’s still Canada’s indie queen. I’m not sure if I just wasn’t paying attention, but I always love when you don’t really hear anything about an artist hyping up their new album and then all of a sudden – BAM – it’s out, like Radiohead always does. But it’s just so rad to have an album catch you completely off guard on every level. Arts & Crafts were holding Metals close to the chest because they knew their quarterback had a Brett Favre shovel pass up her sleeve. Sick.
The Playlist
MYTHS Myths (Self-Released)
Craziest and probably best band in Vancouver; their self-titled full-length does its best to capture to disc the absolute chaos that Myths are capable of delivering in sweaty spaces across East Vancouver.
THE DRUMS Portamento (Frenchkiss)
Tight, sexy guitar boys from Brooklyn. Fun to dance and drink flirtinis to.
BONNIE PRINCE BILLY Wolfroy Goes To Town (Drag City)
One of the all-time greats in my book, Oldham’s back for his equivalent of “Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan”… violent imagery, subtle humour and quiet, tender moments of sexual tension.
THE FIELD Looping State of Mind (Kompakt)
Always loved The Field. Absolutely gorgeous, haunting pulses of electronic music that make me think I could get into clubbing for 34 minutes.
DAN MANGAN Oh Fortune (Arts & Crafts)
Listened to this upon it’s arrival in the store today. Liked it a lot. Arts & Crafts have certainly shifted their vision over the years – I can’t say I was sold at first but the Dan Man does the Canadian Indie Soul Rocker better than anyone I ever heard.
THE RAPTURE In The Grace of Your Love (DFA)
The fuck happened to these guys? They are too good. Seriously wish they would’ve capitalized on what they had back when it was 2002. Woulda been cool to see but now it’s just sad.

Friday OCTOBER 21 – Death Cab For Cutie @ Rogers Arena
If you’ve been following the Zulu Report at all, you should know by now that I don’t joke. I’m legit excited about seeing DCFC in a huge arena. When’s the last time you saw an arena rock show? In case you don’t remember seeing Incubus and Hoobastank in Grade 7, they’re like seeing the Canucks or any professional sports event, but way better. I personally get totally high on any kind of huge spectacle that’s completely overproduced. But I’ve never seen a treasured indie-rock band make the jump as Gibbard and Co. have. Should be seriously awesome.

TWIN SISTER – “Bad Street” – In Heaven (Domino)
A little sexier on their first proper full length, Twin Sister steps out from the blogosphere to deliver this baby for Domino. Feels like ages ago I first heard “I Want A House” as a year-end list for Montreal blog Said The Gramophone. The Brooklyn 5-piece has come along way. Wispy vocals and interlocking synth lines, but somehow not overly dancey or obnoxious. It’s smooth indie rock. I keep writing things and realizing that they read bad in print, but somehow they don’t bug me on the record. I like this band. Read more

GIRLS – “Die” – Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther)
You never heard Girls do anything like this before. They really rock out for once on this song, appropriately titled “Die”. For those who are kind of bugged by frontman Chris Owens’ voice (or annoying backstory—anybody else roll their eyes at that kind of thing?), you make take comfort in the fact that he puts his vocal melodies in the backseat and lets the loud ass guitars drive the song for several minutes. It’s an awesome classic rock jam (OK, it kinda reminds me of Wolfmother). Read more

JAY-Z & KANYE WEST – “Why I Love You” – Watch The Throne (Def Jam)
Hot hot track. I was ready to pan this record on principal, but I really believe these two masters of their style have delivered a hard-hitting LP of clever rhymes and phat beats. This track in particular has had me crooning along to the chorus at the top of my lungs, especially the part where they tune it up a third or whatever (it’s so awesome). Dude sounds like TV On The Radio but I don’t think it’s him. Read more

LOWER DENS – “I Get Nervous” – (TWIN-HAND MOVEMENT)
This just in on vinyl! Yes, yes, to some, Lower Dens might have already been on your Top 25 Most Played for some time now, but now you can slap a sleeve on it and add it to your stack of wax. “I Get Nervous” is mesmerizing; good for background music at the dinner party you’ve been meaning to host all summer, but also good to sit down to once everyone has left. There’s a mysterious magnetic quality to Lower Dens sound that leaves a real lasting impression. There are no bells and whistles, no catchy filler and the result is simple and beautiful. Not only will your guests be leaving with ‘LOWER DENS” written on their napkin, but a mellow addiction to their new favourite band. Read more

CAPITOL 6 – FEVER/HENRY’S OPUS 7”
Capitol 6 “Fever” from Light Organ Records on Vimeo.
Fever couldn’t have come out at a better time. The balance between melancholy and merriment on this track is timed perfectly with those last few days before you have to admit the summer is coming to an end. Local band Capitol 6 have encapsulated the decline of the season in under five minutes, leaving you feeling nostalgic yet contented. Fever is the song that gets the credits rolling to another glorious Vancouver summer. Flip the record in two weeks, when those first leaves start to fall and you’ve got the perfect soundtrack to the opening credits of autumn. Where the beautiful, almost hypnotic guitar riff was in Fever, is a longing organ line in Henry’s Opus. Get it while it’s still hot. Read more

“Drug” from White Denim – D (Downtown Music)
Austin power trio +1 extra guitarist return for another round of smooth garage rock. This song is actually pretty awesome. It’s called “Drug”… heh heh. No, but seriously…I like their use of space between the huge guitar chords. Got a fairly legit classic rock vibe happening which, I’ll admit, usually rubs me the wrong way. But they pull it off. Cool and forward-thinking band. Read more

ICEAGE – “White Rune” – New Brigade (What’s Your Rupture?)
When I read the description of this VERY YOUNG band from Denmark, my first thought was “I’ll probably like this.” I was right. Loud little dudes bring the heat to every track on their debut LP. His voice swings low and reminds me of some kinda Robert Smith type of thing. I’ll be honest, I still don’t quite understand what formula the blogosphere hype machine uses to calculate which bands are gonna blow up—I wouldn’t have pegged Iceage, but the tunes are solid and loud and aggressive and that’s about all I ask from my rock bands! TY SEGALL – “Goodbye Bread” – Goodbye Bread (Drag City)
The first time I heard Ty Segall was this morning. He writes really beautiful songs. No gimmicks or smokes ‘n mirrors, just fuzzy guitars and reverberating vocals to cool you off in the summer heat (I mean, if there was heat in Vancouver). If it’s OK for rock and roll music to be pretty, Ty Segall is hitting random letters on the typewriter and getting all the words in the right order.
