Seen In Vancouver #286: Rain Rain, Go Away …Or Better Yet Rain All The Hell You Want

A few Strathcona dads are pooling their know-how and creaky backs to rebuild the Scout Ramp for us and our kids to skate after school. The new transitions were installed today, and tomorrow we hope to retool and install the platforms and replace the masonite skin before dropping in high and dry. #RainSucks

Smoke Break #829: From The Department Of Marketing Can Sometimes Be Totally Wicked

I suspect several people went mad and a whole forest died during the painstaking creation of this most ornate version of J.S. Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, ever. All for a cell phone we will probably never see in Vancouver.

Smoke Break #824: Getty’s John Moore On Epic Battles In Libya And The Arab Revolts…

Via Nerdcore:

Photographer John Moore is no stranger to combat. As a member of an Associated Press team in 2005, he shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and he’s done extended stints in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, South Africa, Mexico and Nicaragua and elsewhere in the last 20 years.

Yet despite his relative comfort with being on the frontlines, Moore told the NewsHour from his hotel room in Cairo that his latest assignment -a six-week trip that took him to the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Libya – might have been his most dangerous. Moore recorded the interview for us after sneaking out of Benghazi, Libya en route back to his home in Denver.

On Facebook And The First Look At The New Version Of Scout…

January 16, 2011

We will be rolling out the new version of Scout this week, perhaps as soon as Wednesday night. If you’d like to see a larger screenshot of the new version, be sure to “LIKE” the site’s brand new Facebook page here. The new look and functionality is the happy consequence of our collaboration with design friends Phoebe and Aren of Glasfurd & Walker (see also the brands for Bao Bei, L’Abattoir, Meat & Bread) and Karen Hamilton of TinyBites. We love the results, and hope you will too (soon). Now back to work!

A Chilly Day In The Life Of Scott Schumann Of “The Sartorialist”

January 10, 2011

Scott Schumann’s The Sartorialist is one of our favourite blogs, ever, so we were thrilled to find this new micro-doc depicting a day in his creative life. So what does he do? He walks around New York City (and sometimes Paris, Milan, Barcelona, etc) and takes very good pictures of fashionably dressed people. Must be nice! We’d love to have someone with a quality camera and a patient eye for idiosyncratic looks to help contribute in a similar vein to the new version of Scout that we are about to roll out (nearly finished!). If you’re interested, email us at scoutmagazine [at] gmail.com.

On Accidentally Stumbling Into The Most Delicious Luck Ever…

by Andrew Morrison | I took my kids out for dinner at Sea Monstr Sushi in Gastown last night and the chef, Keith, told us that they boys and girls at Peckinpah down the street were testing their brand new meat smoker for the very first time. So we paid the bill and split pretty quick. Popping our heads in, we could smell the work in progress. If you can imagine a flower – the best flower ever with an aroma so intoxicating that it made your knees weak – then imagine a glorious field of them in full bloom. That was the smell when we walked in.

The smoker, a big metal beast behind the bar, would open in 30 minutes. Can we come back and watch? “Sure. You can try some too if you want.” So we went over to L’Abattoir for dessert (awesome) and then returned just in time for the christening. I didn’t have a proper camera to record the occasion, only my iPhone. We stuck around and ate some ribs and sausage, and I’m still reeling from the unexpected joy.

“Daddy, when will it open?” Patience, my son. Peckinpah is still very much under construction, but they aim to unleash shortly, as in before Christmas. So be good for goodness sake.

ALL ANTICIPATED OPENINGS

Inside Gastown’s “Peckinpah” As It Gets Closer To Opening Day…

by Andrew Morrison | I took a gander inside the Peckinpah space yesterday to see how they were coming along. They’ve suffered some delays but it appears as if they’re back on track. As you can see from the photos below, the bar has taken shape, and much of the kitchen equipment has been installed (the brand new smoker looks and smells amazing). Cooler still are the archaeological finds. Behind a false wall downstairs where the washrooms are being built they discovered a Georgia Straight wallpaper job dating back to the year I was born (1973), a series of antique bottles, a dusty book of mint condition vinyl (still in their yellowing sleeves) and much more. Take a look:
