The GOODS from La Quercia
Vancouver, BC | “Whosoever says truffle,” wrote Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, “utters a grand word, which awakens erotic and gastronomic ideas…” Then let the word be uttered! The West Side’s multiple award-winning La Quercia restaurant is getting set to plate their much anticipated annual Truffle supper on the evening of November 3rd (6:30pm start). “It is the best truffle year in many years,” says owner/chef Adam Pegg. “We got some in today and they look and smell unbelievable”. The evening starts with glasses of sparkling Bellavista Francacorta and then moves through several courses, all of which are are paired with excellent wines (Arneis Alutto 2010, Ruche Gatto Pierfrancesco 2010, Nebbiolo Travaglini Gattinara Riseva 2001, Barolo Dagromis Gaja 2008, Sfursat 5 Stelle Nino Negri 2009, Amarone Classico Sant’Urbano) and loaded with truffles (think pheasant, risotto ai porcini, vitello crudu, etc). Tickets are $350 and available through the restaurant by phone: 604-676-1007. Read more

Mother Nature routinely throws us something extraordinary to ponder, discuss, pontificate over and, in the best cases, to digest. There are flavours from her cupboard that science simply cannot reproduce, imitate or ever have a hope of surpassing. A few spring to mind – saffron, vanilla, cinnamon, certain herbs and of course, truffles…(there are certainly more so please comment on whatever else you can add). Read more
UPDATE: We learn in the Tablespotting forum (via Gothamist) that Tyler Gray has been having a hard go of selling the White Beast of Alba.
original post below ——————- V
From an email this morning from foraging guru Tyler Gray of Mikuni Wild Harvest:
You’ll have to excuse the blurry picture, it was taken not 2 hrs ago by a very excited Italian gentleman named Francesco the Forager…He stumbled/sprinted out of the forest mid afternoon in a haze of deliria and joy, grasping tightly to his most precious find ever…a 2LB WHITE ALBA TRUFFLE…
2.15 lbs to be exact & by far the largest White Truffle to land in the USA in the last 3 year. Francesco said that he has never ever found a truffle by this tree before, but he could smell it under ground & so he thought it might be big….he was very pleasantly surprised….I think my hands might be shaking too if I were to stumble across this rare treasure.
After much negotiating and an over-caffeinated Italian interpreter sweating us through the whole deal…it is confirmed, Mikuni Wild Harvest has secured this Truffle. The news has some how leaked and a restaurant in NY has offered us $11,000 for this rare and media-friendly Gem….however we are opening this Truffle up to the rest of the country. Do you want to stick it to the big name NY Chefs? Now’s your chance….make a bid.
The Truffle arrives Friday morning and will ship out for a Saturday delivery.
May the deepest pockets win. My mouth still tastes like white alba truffles from my many meals up at Cornucopia last weekend (video), so I’m good for now.
