Oliver, BC | Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is pleased to introduce their new Winemaker Andrew Windsor. An experienced bon vivant and global traveller, Andrew brings a unique blend of passion and scientific knowledge to the winery.

Tinhorn Creek’s approach to winemaking has always been collaborative and Sandra Oldfield will continue this tradition by running the winery as CEO & President whilst working together with her successor Andrew and the winemaking team.

“Andrew’s experimental and innovative new ideas fit perfectly with our approach over the last 20 years of continually evolving and moving forward with our winemaking,” says Sandra. “Andrew’s worldly view will ensure a fresh direction as we continue to work dynamically to create our spectacular wines.”

Ontario-born Andrew’s first taste of wine was a friend’s parents’ attempt at homemade wine but it didn’t put him off and he went on to take a course in wine whilst studying Environmental Science at the University of Guelph. In his twenties Andrew met Jamie McFarland of The Ice House Winery, who invited him to assist with his ice wine project in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Andrew had a sharp taste of the winemaking world when he was called to start picking grapes at 3am in minus12C.

Heading to warmer climes, Andrew gained a Masters of Oenology at the University of Adelaide in Australia in 2006 and then took on an Assistant Winemaking role at Mollydooker Wines in McLaren Vale, where he lived on the beach and cycled to work through vineyards filled with kangaroos.

Working closely with Viticulturist, Andrew Moon and Assistant Winemaker, Korol Kuklo, Andrew will be overseeing the winemaking process from vines to bottle. He brings with him a wealth of experience having worked in wineries in the Okanagan, Marlborough in New Zealand and the Northern Rhone in France before returning to Canada to work as VQA Winemaker for Andrew Peller Ltd. in Niagara.

“France taught me that wine is not just a science but an art form, a culture and an expression of a place. Wine has the ability to take you to a place in the world without leaving your home,” says Andrew. “I want to make the best wine in Canada and the only place I can do that is the South Okanagan.”

Andrew will be continuing Tinhorn Creek’s tradition of creating much-loved wines but his fresh approach will bring an exciting new element, whilst helping the winery to continue to progress and move forward into the next 20 years of exceptional winemaking. Read more

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE | “Oldfield Series” 2Bench Red With Tinhorn’s Sandra Oldfield

February 24, 2014

IMG_5695

by >Treve Ring | There are people who have seen a lot in this industry, and then there are people who have seen it all. “When I arrived in the valley, ‘Okanagan Riesling’ and Marechal Foch were the most planted grapes” remembers Sandra Oldfield. Back then, the funky so-far-from-Riesling hybrid dubbed ‘Okanagan Riesling’ and the foxy, always-divisive Marechal Foch were ruling the vineyards. “They kept saying ‘Riesling this and Riesling that’ but I knew there was no possible way that stuff could actually be Riesling.” Thankfully, Sandra had the adventuresome pluck and foresight to put down roots, literally and figuratively. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary for Oliver’s Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, a golden milestone for CEO and Winemaker Oldfield and her Golden Mile winery.

Since harvesting their first grapes in 1994 in the southern Okanagan, the family-owned and operated Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has been a pioneer of carbon-neutral and sustainable winemaking and instrumental in introducing the world to BC wine (thankfully, not ‘Okanagan Riesling’). I joined Sandra and a handful of wine folks for lunch at Good Wolfe Kitchen & Bar recently as she cracked some screwcaps (all wines are under stelvin), reminisced (did you know Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Forrest Gump both came out in 1994?), and looked forward to the year ahead.

Her Vancouver visit kicked off a series of 20 events held this year to celebrate Tinhorn’s 20th birthday. Not content just to ponder what the next year or two will bring – though contentious sub-appellations were bandied about over the dozens of glasses on the table – the pioneering Sandra is “very excited about what the next 20 years will have to offer.” Us too, Sandra. Cheers to 20 more!

Tinhorn Creek Oldfield Series 2Bench Red 2010 | OKANAGAN | $30

unnamed

The 2010 2Bench Red is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Big boned, with ample cassis, fine cedar spice, thorny leaf, black raspberries and blacker coffee, ending off with raspy grained tannins and faint tobacco smoke. The wine is held back and aged at the winery, released only when it’s ready to drink (because, of course, consumers don’t cellar).

Straight up – why did you make this wine? After making wine here from estate grapes for a dozen years we got a feel for what grapes grow well in what parts of our vineyard. We decided to make a big, bold red blend because we were in complete control of the quality from our vineyards, we knew what varieties would make the best blend and we were excited to release a well-aged red wine to our customers.

Where are the grapes from? Our grapes come from the heart of red wine country in BC — what I like to call the Okanagan Valley’s “Extreme South”. The majority of the blend comes from estate vines in our Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench and the Petit Verdot vines are what I look out at from my bedroom window on the Tinhorn Creek Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. The name “2Bench” comes from blending these estate grapes from both benches in the Oliver area of BC.

Your ideal pairing with this wine would be…? A winter hardy stew with fork tender beef (preferably from our own Okanagan’s Finest Angus Beef grown right in Oliver), some lovely rustic vegetables, potatoes and with a bit of the 2Bench Red mixed in.

Favourite BC wine, other than yours? I’d say my favourite BC wine that I’ve had recently (this week) was the Quails’ Gate 2012 Chardonnay; I had it on the weekend and it was just lovely. I also love the Rieslings from Orofino and the Pinot Noirs from Stoneboat Vineyards.

What do you drink when you’re not drinking BC wine? We drink wines from all over the world and some of my favourite places are Alsace, California and Washington State, but lately it has been all I can do to just stay on top of all that BC has to offer. I put my focus recently on trying a new BC wine each week, and preferably from a winery I have not had from a while.

GOODS | The 20th Harvest Was A Tale Of Two Vintages At Tinhorn Creek Vineyards

November 13, 2013

Tinhorn Creek is located at 32830 Tinhorn Creek Road in Oliver, BC | 1-888-484-6467 | www.tinhorn.com

The GOODS from Tinhorn Creek

Oliver, BC | It’s been a busy time at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards with the grape picking wrapping up for the year and Winemaker and CEO Sandra Oldfield celebrating the winery’s 20th harvest with a special year that saw two types of vintage emerge.

The Okanagan’s hot summer leading up to September meant that the Tinhorn Creek team was tracking the maturity of the grapes two weeks earlier than usual, a promising sign for the first vintage. Variable weather in September that ranged from hot sun to hail, wind and drizzle, lasted well into October and created the second vintage.

The good news from September’s mixed weather was that it slowed down the ripening of the grapes enough to help the flavours catch up with the rapidly rising sugars – giving an incredible intensity of flavour to the grapes at harvest, this slow down in ripening simultaneously caused some initial concern about attaining the proper ripeness for harvest, as it has done for the past three years, but ultimately the quality was attained in enough quantity to produce the full range of high-quality reds.

“This year we’ve expanded on the popularity of our Pinot Gris and our Gewürztraminer,” says Winemaker and CEO Sandra Oldfield, adding “both are pretty exceptional in the tanks right now. Variety-wise one of the stand-outs of this vintage is the Merlot – the grapes loved the hot summer and its flavours are going to knock peoples’ collective socks off when the wines are released.” Read more

GOODS | Change To Old Rule Lets Miradoro At Tinhorn Creek Serve Craft Beer & Spirits

September 20, 2013

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is located at 32830 Tinhorn Creek Rd in Oliver, BC | 250-498-3743 | Tinhorn.com

The GOODS from Tinhorn Creek

Oliver, BC | The team at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards and their onsite Miradoro Restaurant are today raising a glass to their new Food Primary license. The new license will allow guests to enjoy BC beer and spirits alongside the Tinhorn Creek and other local regional wines currently served at the award-winning restaurant. The first beer that will be featured is from the award-winning Firehall Brewery in Oliver, BC, just 5km from the winery.

Like most wineries in the Okanagan, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is situated inside the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and is therefore under restrictions that prohibit business activities that are not related to agriculture. The restaurant was allowed to serve wine produced on the vineyard but was restricted when it came to offering more beverage choices to guests.

“We’ve worked with all levels of government, from local to regional and provincial, to make this license possible,” says Sandra Oldfield, Proprietor and Winemaker at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards. “It’s been a great collaborative experience to work with all of the organizations involved to achieve our goal of being able to offer more choice to our guests by showcasing other locally made beverages alongside our fantastic wines.”

Attaining the license has been a cooperative effort and Tinhorn Creek Vineyards would like to thank Allan Patton, Director of the Regional District of the Okanagan Similkameen and his Advisory Planning Committee (APC), the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), and the BC Liquor Control and Licensing Commission (BCLCLC) for their help in making the license possible and opening the doors for other Okanagan wineries to be able to offer the same choice as Miradoro.
