GOODS: Tinhorn Creek Vineyards Releases Their 2010 “Oldfield Series” Cabernet Franc

Tinhorn Creek is located at 32830 Tinhorn Creek Road in Oliver, BC | 1-888-484-6467 | www.tinhorn.com

The GOODS from Tinhorn Creek

Oliver, BC | Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is excited to release their first vintage of 2010 Oldfield Series Cabernet Franc. Several years in the making, this unique wine features 100% Cabernet Franc grapes, which were picked in October 2010 from a specially selected area of the vineyard. Barrel-aged for 15 months, the Oldfield Series vintage has spent the last nine months ageing in the bottle; ready for release on February 1, 2013.

A limited edition of 374 cases will only be available through the winery and Tinhorn Creek Vineyards’ Miradoro Restaurant. Although it was once dismissed as a difficult varietal, Cabernet Franc is growing a loyal following from wine lovers looking for a special characterful red and is now one of the Okanagan’s most exciting red varietals.

“As one of the pioneers in British Columbia, making a varietal Cabernet Franc since 1996, Tinhorn Creek felt it was long overdue to make a reserve-style Oldfield Series Cabernet Franc,” says Sandra Oldfield, President, CEO & Winemaker at Tinhorn Creek. “Our estate vines are now between 15-17 years old and the depth of character we get from them is amazing.”

Sandra Oldfield’s ongoing passion for the varietal has produced a complex vintage that was picked on October 21, 2010 from their Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. All the Cabernet Franc came from a single block that was specially selected to create the Oldfield Series vintage.

The wine was barrel-aged for 15 months in a combination of new French and American oak barrels. A final 9 month bottle ageing completes the journey from grape to glass. Food-friendly, rich and fruity, the Cabernet Franc was traditionally grown to blend with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create a Bordeaux-style wine. With some loving care the hardy black grape thrives well in British Columbia’s wine growing region. Read more

GOODS: South Okanagan’s “Tinhorn Creek” Releases Its 2008 Oldfield Series Pinot Noir

Tinhorn Creek is located at 32830 Tinhorn Creek Road in Oliver, BC | 1-888-484-6467 | www.tinhorn.com

The GOODS from Tinhorn Creek

Oliver, BC | Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is excited to release their much-anticipated 2008 Oldfield Series Pinot Noir. After a year in French oak barrels followed by three years in the bottle, the very first release of this series is a limited production of about 250 cases and will only be available from the winery.

Who in their right mind would age a wine for four years before they decide to sell it? In Spain, to be classified as a Reserva the wines must be aged for a total of three years with at least one year in barrel. Spanish Grand Reserva wines are aged for a minimum of five years before release. Tinhorn Creek’s first Oldfield Series Pinot Noir lies somewhere between those two classification levels.

The 2008 was from 100% estate fruit grown on the most westerly lying Pinot Noir block on Tinhorn Creek’s Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. After a fruitful flowering period in early summer, clusters were thinned at two different times in the summer assuring a balanced crop that would ripen fully. The grapes were harvested on October 20 at a very ripe 24.4 Brix (% sugar). The grapes were destemmed only—no crushing—then sent to tank to ferment for 14 days. The wine was designated as Tinhorn Creek’s first Oldfield Series Pinot Noir soon after fermentation and was aged in 100% French oak barrels for just over nine months before being blended and bottled. For the next three years the wine aged in bottle at a constant temperature of 16C, developing additional layers of complexity on top of the already deep fruit flavours that were there from the start. Headlining the event on June 24th is Vancouver-based five-piece roots and alternative rock band The Matinee. The same day that a raging fire destroyed Southern Okanagan Secondary School (SOSS) this past September, The Matinee immediately offered to help out in any way they could via Twitter (@TheMatineeMusic). Having played at Tinhorn Creek’s Canadian Concert Series last year, The Matinee felt a connection to this small community. “As soon as we heard about the school burning down we were compelled to help out, as we had played at the school,” says Matt Layzell, lead vocalist of The Matinee. The band has toured through many BC schools over the past four years with various programs, including the BC Schizophrenia Society’s Reachout Program, and the BC Arts Council’s Artstarts Program. “We loved playing the old theater at the school and we were saddened to hear about the damage suffered in the fire.” Learn more after the jump… Read more

GOODS: Tinhorn Creek Joins Ocean Wise, Gets Certified As A “Salmon-Safe” Vineyard

Miradoro is located at 32830 Tinhorn Creek Road in Oliver, BC | 250.498.3742 | www.miradoro.ca

The GOODS from Miradoro

Oliver, BC | Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has become one of the first “Salmon-Safe” certified vineyards in B.C. Their award-winning restaurant, Miradoro, has also joined the Ocean Wise program. “We’re very proud to announce that Tinhorn Creek has successfully passed a rigorous assessment that verifies our commitment to protecting the environment as well as advancing more eco-friendly practices throughout the Okanagan,” says Tinhorn Creek Winemaker and CEO Sandra Oldfield. The Salmon-Safe program looks at agricultural practices to protect water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and overall watershed health based on a detailed set of peer-reviewed guidelines. Examples of Tinhorn Creek’s management practices that address Salmon-Safe principles include: increasing water efficiency by switching to a drip irrigation system; active in planting native vegetation around riparian zones; choosing pesticides with less harmful impacts on aquatic life; and supporting biodiversity on the property through inter-seeding native species in the vineyard alleys.

As part of their commitment to Salmon-Safe principles, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards plans to enhance the ecosystem well-being of their vineyards by developing specialized “biodiversity islands”, which will help to ensure beneficial insects and wildlife have access to appropriate habitat. They also have plans to implement further measures that will slow down or capture water from major storm events.

Salmon-Safe and Tinhorn Creek’s certification is significant for the whole region as water conservation is a key priority in the Okanagan. Tinhorn Creek is committed to supporting the recovery of salmon in the Okanagan Basin, including Okanagan River sockeye (one of only two remaining populations of sockeye salmon in the international Columbia River Basin), by helping to set a high standard for land management practices and to raise awareness of the connection between agriculture and ecosystem health. For more information on the certification program visit www.salmonsafe.org/bc.

Not content with simply making changes to benefit the immediate environs of Tinhorn Creek, Miradoro Restaurant—named Best Winery/Vineyard Dining at the 23rd Annual Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards—recently confirmed its participation in the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program. “Conservation is important to us,” says Miradoro Executive Chef Jeff Van Geest, “Joining the Ocean Wise program is a great opportunity to educate and empower our guests about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood.” Ocean Wise works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers ensuring that they have the most current scientific information regarding seafood and helping them make ocean-friendly buying decisions.
