We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. style="color: #ff0000;">Strange Brew | Grab a seat at the Rio for a screening of Strange Brew. “Something is rotten at the Elsinore Brewery. Bob and Doug Mackenzie (as seen on SCTV) help the orphan Pam regain the brewery founded by her recently-deceased father. But to do so, they must confront the suspicious brewmaster and two teams of vicious hockey players.” Stick around afterwards for the 9pm screening of Slap Shot. What better, more quintessentially Canadian way could there be to cap an evening during Craft Beer Week?<br

The temporary shop will offer new linens, cottons, ceramics and more. Can’t wait.
Walk | The season of the walking tour is upon us! The Vancouver Heritage Foundation runs a series of walks that explore cracks and corners of the city with a healthy dose of history and and folklore that will leave you better informed and appreciative of the subtleties of your hometown. Get to know your city a little better with a walk through Chinatown this weekend. The tour covers the fact that Chinese immigration to Vancouver predates the city’s incorporation in 1886 and introduces participants to societal buildings, constructed as headquarters for Chinese fraternal and clan groups. Interesting stuff. Bonus: stick around for a late afternoon lunch at Fat Dragon and then catch the Chinatown Night Market. Pretty solid Friday, amirite?
Dig-in | There’s a dinner going down at Harvest Community Foods in Strathcona this week. A locally made line of authentic Italian tomato based sauce (Sugo) is officially launching their product with a pasta dinner at the shop. We haven’t tasted the sauce (we like to make our own), but we dig local, independent, small batch goodness, and we also like the idea of a bunch of people sharing a Friday night meal at Harvest. This block of Union has changed so much over the past year. Get there a little early and check out cool summer clothing at neighbours Charlie & Lee and <a

They dial in a sound that is instantly catchy, yet hard to place completely…is that a Kinks influenced riff or gorgeous Big Star melodies?” Cool, free and enriching. Take some cash in your pocket to score from Zulu’s Slugfest | I’ve always wanted to make it to Slugfest for the weirdness factor, but it does require a bit of a drive out to Richmond. Still, I can’t imagine it being a let down once you get there. There’s a beauty contest (vote for biggest, smallest, or slimiest) followed by the Great Richmond Slug Race (in which, one assumes, the slugs will race each other in especially exciting fashion). Note that this is a bring your own slug event (for serious), so get out and find yourself a winner. Your garden or local park is always a good bet. And be sure to look after the little dudes. We know from experience that they like green lettuce, kale and cucumbers.
Anywhere But Here | I like the sound of the international Polaroid exhibit Anywhere But Here that’s going up at the Positive Negative gallery this week. “The fleeting times where you are at peace, where everything is in harmony — a perfect moment. ‘Anywhere But Here‘ investigates and visualizes the sublime escapism people reach for every day solidified in a Polaroid as unique and individual as that instant.” There is a substantial list of contributing artists for this gig. Works have come from Germany, Sweden, England, Italy, and all across the United States and Canada. Check it out.<br

Slip in Tuesday night (admission by donation) to check out this new show. I’m always fascinated to see what a curator will find/see when given access to the massive permanent collection at the VAG. This show, curated by Daina Augaitis (chief curator/associate director) draws from the permanent collection and “…features artists who utilize repetitive actions or serial images to open up perception both figuratively and literally. From the mechanistic repetition inherent in much domestic work and industrial labour, to the multiple versions afforded by technological developments, to the limits of endurance that have been tested by performance artists, this exhibition offers a number of perspectives on what it means to do something again and again and again.” Sounds awesome.
Learn | Fusion Kitchen is a start-up social enterprise that helps recent immigrant women develop their transferable skills, work experience, and self-confidence to gain employment in the Canadian workforce. Even though many of the women that come to Canada are well educated and have years of professional experience, it is often difficult for them to find a good job that makes use of their skill sets. Fusion Kitchen got the idea to tap in to some of this skill to offer Vancouverites unique cooking classes with a seriously authentic vibe. Each 3-hour class features a tutorial and hands-on cooking of “mom’s cooking” dishes. “When you enter the kitchen and learn to cook with our teachers, you are taught about the ingredients used, the secrets to making the perfect dish, and details about the culture. We provide a community where knowledge, skills, and culture are exchanged.” This week you can drop in to learn how to cook Pakistani food (think Mint and Lentil Kebabs and Strawberry Lassi!).
Portraits Of Cool | Smash has a show of portraits by local lecturer (Emily Carr) and photographer Art Perry right now. The show boasts over 30 ‘portraits of cool’ taken by Art Perry over the past 40 years. “His images are as honest as his subjects. Never a studio photographer Perry has taken these portraits over the past forty years with a handheld camera and greyhound-fast film in hotel rooms, backstage, backyards, graveyards, street corners, cafes and studios. Always the intimacy and spontaneity of the moment are revealed in a naked truth. This is the history of hip.” Perry will be at the Gallery on Friday night to talk about his work.
Spring Wines | Busy schedule? Don’t think you can swing a very long weekend away to taste your way through the Naramata Bench’s many vineyards and their coveted wines? Get this: a slough of the Bench’s wineries are coming to town for a Spring Release party, saving us city-slickers the travel time. All you need to do is hop on the skytrain (zippy 25 minute ride right to the River Market in New Westminster) and quadruple the number of wineries that would be comfortable to see in one day by gathering under one roof. Pretty sweet, right? Do it.
Making Some Cheese | The UBC Farm’s Growing Season Workshop Series presents one of its popular cheesemaking workshops this week. Intro to Cheesemaking with David Rotsztain is a quick 3.5 hour crash course in which David will demonstrate and explain the techniques for making three basic styles of cheese (paneer, yogourt cheese and camembert) and leave participants with a solid foundation for making cheese at home. The emphasis is on simple, hands-on techniques that can be easily reproduced. This workshop will sell out VERY quickly, so get up on it.
Darkroom Party | Spring’s here! It’s time dust of the manual camera and make use of all this fantastic natural light. Exposing all that celluloid is only half of the fun. Think about getting your hands dirty and learn how to develop that film on your own. Local photographers Virginie and Bastien of VNB Fineartphoto Workshops are throwing a bit of a party/get re-acquainted with film event on Friday night. The idea is pretty low-key: head to the Cineworks studio in Railtown to meet Virginie and Bastien, have a glass of wine, fiddle around with a few photography stations (shoot a paper negative and make 19th Century photographic portraiture using a Sténopé or Create a Photogram), have another glass of wine, talk to some cool people, chill the hell out. Basically, check out what sort of skills you can pick up at a vVNB workshop and see if you’re interested in digging a little deeper. Scout will be there. We hope you will be too.
Shera Kelly and Julia Spitale of The Wheely Slow Cooking Tour

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. From our calendar to yours…WINE | CedarCreek’s winemaker Darryl Brooker and president Gordon Fitzpatrick are heading to Blood Alley this week to release their 2011 vintage. If you’re interested in tasting six of CedarCreek’s newest white wines paired with artisanal cheeses, local charcuterie and a selection of kick-ass condiments, you’ll want to get yourself sorted soon (the great price and the aforementioned condiments pretty much guarantees a sell-out event).
Tuesday, April 17 | 7pm | Salt Tasting Room | $40

SLOW FOOD | Last summer, Shera Kelly and Julia Spitale of The Wheely Slow Cooking Tour (pictured above) traveled from Saltspring Island to Halifax singing, cooking and connecting with sustainable farms along the way. This week, the pair will recap their tour, show footage of their interviews with farmers and present a panel of experts to share their wisdom about local food systems. This is going to be a really great event. Not only are Julia and Shera super wonderful people who are pretty much guaranteed to throw down with a good tune, but their panelists are awesome, too. Peter Ladner (author of The Urban Food Revolution), Lori Petryk (dietitian from Good for You Good for the Earth), and Will Valley (urban farmer from Inner City Farms) know their sustainable food systems and they’ll be on hand to enlighten us all. Before you attend, be sure to purchase an apple, take a picture of it, and post it to this event page along with information about where you bought the apple and where it was grown.
TINY HOMES | Super star Lloyd Khan is giving a lecture about Tiny Homes this week. He’ll be showing off the work of some 150 DIY builders who have built tiny homes, studios, saunas, garden sheds, and greenhouses, each on the forefront of downsizing and self-sufficiency. Kahn of Marin County, California is a pioneer of the green building movement and the the author of Shelter and Home Work: Hand-built Shelter. I stumbled across his work a few years back and immediately developed a huge crush on him. He takes great photos of unique homes and structures and seems to float around the world from one interesting situation to the next. He strikes me as the kind of guy capable of filling an hour and a half easily with anecdotes and the kind of hippy sunshine that only alights on the hills of Marin.
4:20 | On the 20th day of the 4th month (that would be this Friday), thousands of people gather in, on and around the Vancouver Art Gallery to celebrate one of BC’s strongest industries: marijuana. Pot cookies, smoking tents, bongo drums, naked people and dreadlocks…expect it all. The first reefers are lit early in the day and the cloud of blue love gathers all day, reaching it’s zenith in a storm at 4:20pm.
