From Vernon in the north to Osoyoos in the south, we love exploring the Okanagan. It has everything that we love and enjoy in life, chief among them being great food, breathtaking (and accessible) landscapes, and a variety of local crafted alcoholic beverages.
In the Okanagan at the moment (our HOOD palettes are ever-changing), we’re seeing the blue sky, sandstone, and green grass of Mission Hill; rural community mailbox green; four shades of peach; the sand at Naramata’s 3 Mile Beach (clothing optional); Painted Rock “Red Icon” 2011; the crushpad at Orofino; Haywire “Pink Bub” 2012; “K” Cafe signage tri-colour; Miradoro exterior; Road 13 proprietor Mick Luckhurst’s most excellent moustache; the tractor at Meyer Family Vineyards; sunny day view of Skaha Lake from God’s Mountain; and the green branding of Joiefarm.

The collaboration began last spring when Road 13 owners Pam and Mick Luckhurst brought winemaker J-M Bouchard to the eatery with dozens of tank and barrel samples of different grape varieties and aging methods. Together with Wildebeest co-owner James Iranzad, Wine Director Brooke Delves, and Sommelier Justin Everett, they sat down for a comprehensive tasting and blending session that would result in one light red (Gamay, Pinot Noir) and one Alsatian-inspired white (Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer); both blended to complement chef Wesley Young’s cuisine.
Only 50 cases each of Wildebeest Red and Wildebeest White have been produced. For those that wish to take the Wildebeest experience home with them, a limited number of bottles will also be available at select private stores in the new year.
The good folks at Warren Lane Pictures documented the process in the video above.

Oliver, BC | Trust the team at Road 13 Vineyards to switch it up. Effective this spring, the winery will be moving away from the production of several varietal wines to focus on blends. Joining the popular Honest John’s Red and White and the premium Fifth Element, are Stemwinder, a refreshing white blend (CSPC $21.99) named in honour of the soil of the winery’s home vineyard, and Rockpile, a red blend (CSPC $24.99) named after Mick and Pam Luckhurst’s most difficult vineyard. Both wines can be found at the winery, VQA stores, the BCLDB and private wine stores and restaurants. Read more

The People Who Make It Happen
Owners: Mick & Pam Luckhurst
About Road 13
Road 13 Vineyards is owned and operated by Mick and Pam Luckhurst. Since purchasing the winery in 2003, the Luckhurst’s have focused on making wine that is a reflection of the land, which has given rise to Road 13’s mantra, “It’s all about the dirt.”
Winemaker J-M Bouchard continues this focus by treating the grapes gently and respectfully in order to craft wines with a definite sense of place. Road 13 has three tiers of wine ranging from the very approachable everyday favorites produced under the Honest John’s label, to the high end, complex, age worthy wines of the Jackpot tier. The wine shop at Road 13 is open year round and offers tastings from April to October.
A separate Tasting Lounge is open during the summer months for those who wish for an upscale tasting experience. Road 13 hosts a number of events throughout the year, including the Summer Dinner Series on the 13th of each month from May to October.
These three wines – a white, red and rose – are a tribute to John Oliver, BC Premier from 1918 to 1927. Honest, approachable, and frank these offer value for any occasion and refreshment for everyone from the most discerning wine lover to the thirstiest beer drinker.
The Road 13 tier offers a selection of varietal wines and blends that reflect the terrior where the grapes were grown. This includes the winery’s most recognizable blend, Seventy-Four K, as well as a selection of Low Yield wines, made with grapes from vines cropped to a low tonnage that are pressed gently to surrender only the best juice.
Jackpot is the culmination of all things that make a great wine. Hand-crafted from the best vines the Okanagan has to offer, we let the grapes do what they do best – impress. The finished product is age worthy, complex, and profound. Evoking the joy of winning a hard earned prize, Jackpot is a fitting title for our top wines – the reward for our hard work in the vineyard and cellar.
