Vancouver, BC | The Refinery’s Cocktail Kitchen Series welcomes four “bartender finalists” in January, 2011. As the competitors quickly approach the wood for their chance to win the first ever Cocktail Kitchen at The Refinery and a trip to California, we can’t help but look back at the highlights from the four finalists’ performances over the past 6 months.

During July’s launch month, David Bain of South Granville’s West Restaurant caught guests off guard with his cocktail “The Triple Threat”. This well thought out and super creative cocktail used several different techniques and components. Guests were impressed by the fresh-foam which sat atop a simple four ingredient cocktail, including a homemade triple-chili infused heated agave nectar, The Refinery’s chocolate sweet vermouth, citrus and raw cacao nib Hornitos Reposado Tequila. This cocktail was an instant winner with its pairing of Driftwood Whitebark and Achiote marinated flank steak. Read more

Vancouver, BC | The second installment in the Refinery’s whiskey seminar series is a definitive look at Bourbon Whiskey. As it has claimed many people’s hearts in the past, let us indulge your palates on Tuesday February 2, 2010. What better host than one of Vancouver’s most respected “bourbon” personalities, Maker’s Mark Brand Ambassador, Mr. Ron Oliver. Along with the obvious inclusion of Maker’s Mark, Mr. Oliver will be guiding guests through three other expressions in the Maker’s Mark portfolio, including “1 Day Old” through to “Over Mature” – this will effectively showcase the evolution of Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whiskey. Additionally, Mr. Oliver will guide guests through two other American whiskey styles. As informative as it is delicious, the whiskey seminar will be accompanied by some fantastic cheese, charcuterie, and other goodies The Refinery is well known for. The Refinery and Cask Strength present "Immaculate Conception" an evening dedicated to joys of whiskey and food.

News from Scout supporter The Refinery

December 8th 2009 marks a very special evening. Similar to the Whiskey 101 classes that local aficionado Andrew Starritt is known for, this event will combine Andrew’s unique talent in sourcing some of the most obscure whiskies (five for this event), while Refinery Chef Michael Carter creates a 5 course menu using whiskey in thoughtful ways. We will begin the evening with an award-winning whiskey cocktail by Refinery’s General Manager & Mixologist, Lauren Mote. This event is not for the faint-at-heart. There will be bundles of whiskey consumption, a sensory-overload, and a huge educational component. Read more

Better Late Than Never: Grand Opening Party At “The Refinery”

room3

The good folks at The Refinery (1115 Granville above SIP) are hosting much of the local restaurant industry at their Grand Opening party this Tuesday, July 21st. The action starts at 6:30pm and goes strong until 12:30am. We hope to see you there.

The Refinery Makes It Official

Scout member The Refinery “officially” opens on Granville. We have some video dating back to their soft opening here, plus some photos below.

From the press release:

December 3, 2008 – Vancouver, BC – Ryan Newman, Raymond Staniscia and Peter Raptis are pleased to announce the opening of The Refinery at 1115 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC.

The Refinery is a Charcuterie based, market fresh style eatery and wine bar and downtown Granville Street’s newest and most exciting restaurant.

Concentrating on artisan cured meats, pates, terrines, cheeses, seafood dishes and sharing platters, Chef Michael Carter also bows to business partners Ray and Peter’s European backgrounds with antipasto and tapas plates. A revolving selection of warm items are seasonal and market driven.

Behind the bar a large selection of wine by the glass, champagne and bubble by the bottle and classic and original cocktails are offered along with boutique bottled beers. With a goal toward maintaining a sustainable friendly wine list with regional products and organic selections The Refinery partners plan on keeping the wine list selection at least fifty percent British Columbian.

The interior of The Refinery is a surprise in many ways. First, this second floor room is environmentally current. Designed by Marilou Rudakewich and May Cheng of the award winning M Studio, a well respected name in the environmental design field whose previous work includes Hapa Izakaya, Paramount Earl’s Restaurant, the Mountain Club in Whistler, who have created a comfortably unique room.

Built with some of the highest green standards available, from reclaimed wood to energy efficient lighting, the room is environmentally low impact while high impact describes the design.  Non-toxic building supplies were used from adhesives to paint; incoming water is all filtered and recycling needs were built into the kitchen design. The room feels welcoming, the design fresh and warm and the environmental standards apparent in the fresh air and slightly woody fragrance. The soft tread of cork floors and wood ceiling all lesson the ambient noise of a busy working restaurant and art work is both thoughtful and playful (look for some familiar faces in the black and white wallpaper along the south wall).

For Ryan Newman, Raymond Staniscia and Peter Raptis, who also own SIP resto-lounge, The Refinery is a departure both from what the partners have done in the past, and for Granville Street itself, being part of this emerging neighbourhood has given the partners a new desire to appeal to people who live and work in the area, not just for those who visit.

With the street redesign project started, Granville Street may very well become one of the most beautiful and entertaining streets in all of Canada.  A true dining and entertainment destination spot with a world class feel.

First Look At The Refinery

November 13, 2008

Paid a very brief visit to The Refinery tonight, the new project from the Sip Resto Lounge folks (and right next door at 1115 Granville). The soft launch appears to be underway. We would have stayed, but we’d already dined and were on our way to watch the hockey game.

From an email co-owner Peter Raptis sent me a while back, at least back when the working title of the project was MRKT (canned during development).

The room, designed with the environment in mind, has used sustainable materials, LED lighting and energy efficient equipment. Committing to a sustainable work environment, a dedicated bicycle storage area and public transit subsidy are examples of how they are trying to minimize their carbon footprint.

A food primary restaurant and wine bar with a 75-seat capacity will house Granville Street’s only fresh, market-style restaurant. Chef Michael Carter takes pride in introducing elements of charcuterie, cheese culture, cured seafood, fresh breads, antipasti and all things MRKT fresh to the Granville scene. Remaining a step ahead of the competition through exemplary service, great value and the creation of a unique high quality dishes paired with amazing wines and beers from British Columbia and around the world. To commit to the establishment of a sustainable environment MRKT will maintain a majority of local high quality products whenever possible.

We expect our guests to share. Share food, drink and celebrations but more importantly ideas, stories and laughs. A traditional, yet unique, menu and atmosphere will create a sense of ‘belonging’ for locals and tourists alike. At MRKT we are providing an environment that allows our guests to feel carefree and full of life. Giving people the sense gathering in a small village in Europe, while being in their own backyard.

It is the best way to spend time avec amis.

Notable dishes:
Ahi Tuna Confit- roasted bell peppers, Macedonian feta and arugula.
Smoked duck breast – maple roast squash and orange dressing
Goat Cheese brule – roasted baby beets, port glaze, crispy sage
Slow baked Mission figs – crumbled stilton and verjus reduction

Menu prices:
Tasting Plates $5-$30
