Oliver, BC | With past reviews giving the Èquinoxe Syrah and Cabernet Franc 90 points plus, this year’s highly anticipated release of both wines has the Le Vieux Pin team very excited. For the Èquinoxe Syrah, most of fruit grown was grown from a single vineyard in North Oliver on an extension of the Black Sage Bench. This flagship wine captures the unique characteristics of the South Okanagan, with the heat of the desert days marrying the cold of desert nights. It’s an intensely aromatic wine with a refined elegance. The Èquinoxe Cabernet Franc was produced from just one row in the Feuille D’Or vineyard, resulting in a single barrel. More vines have been planted but won’t be included until they reach the same levels of maturity and flavour profile as the already established old vines. Le Vieux Pin will release these wines on September 20th to their wine society members first, before it is available to the public. The GOODS from Tinhorn Creek
Oliver, BC | Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is pleased to introduce their new Winemaker Andrew Windsor. An experienced bon vivant and global traveller, Andrew brings a unique blend of passion and scientific knowledge to the winery.
Tinhorn Creek’s approach to winemaking has always been collaborative and Sandra Oldfield will continue this tradition by running the winery as CEO & President whilst working together with her successor Andrew and the winemaking team.
“Andrew’s experimental and innovative new ideas fit perfectly with our approach over the last 20 years of continually evolving and moving forward with our winemaking,” says Sandra. “Andrew’s worldly view will ensure a fresh direction as we continue to work dynamically to create our spectacular wines.”
Ontario-born Andrew’s first taste of wine was a friend’s parents’ attempt at homemade wine but it didn’t put him off and he went on to take a course in wine whilst studying Environmental Science at the University of Guelph. In his twenties Andrew met Jamie McFarland of The Ice House Winery, who invited him to assist with his ice wine project in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Andrew had a sharp taste of the winemaking world when he was called to start picking grapes at 3am in minus12C.
Heading to warmer climes, Andrew gained a Masters of Oenology at the University of Adelaide in Australia in 2006 and then took on an Assistant Winemaking role at Mollydooker Wines in McLaren Vale, where he lived on the beach and cycled to work through vineyards filled with kangaroos.
Working closely with Viticulturist, Andrew Moon and Assistant Winemaker, Korol Kuklo, Andrew will be overseeing the winemaking process from vines to bottle. He brings with him a wealth of experience having worked in wineries in the Okanagan, Marlborough in New Zealand and the Northern Rhone in France before returning to Canada to work as VQA Winemaker for Andrew Peller Ltd. in Niagara.
“France taught me that wine is not just a science but an art form, a culture and an expression of a place. Wine has the ability to take you to a place in the world without leaving your home,” says Andrew. “I want to make the best wine in Canada and the only place I can do that is the South Okanagan.”
Andrew will be continuing Tinhorn Creek’s tradition of creating much-loved wines but his fresh approach will bring an exciting new element, whilst helping the winery to continue to progress and move forward into the next 20 years of exceptional winemaking. Read more
The GOODS from Hester Creek Estate Winery
Oliver, BC | After a year of terrific buzz about the reserve Cabernet Franc wine from Hester Creek Estate Winery’s Block 3, the wine continues to draw accolades, as last week respected B.C. wine writer John Schreiner called it “a red that should be in the cellars of serious collectors of Okanagan wines.” This recognition comes following the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in British Columbia Wines for the 2010 Reserve Cabernet Franc Block 3.
Used for centuries to add finesse to Old World red blends, here in B.C. Cabernet Franc stands all on its own, showcasing luscious plum, blackberry, cassis and spice characters. It’s a varietal that is perfectly at home in the alluvial soil of the Okanagan Valley’s Golden Mile bench, particularly in Hester Creek’s Block 3, where it consistently produces a wine of impressive structure and complexity. Winemaker Robert Summers — who arrived at Hester Creek in 2006 — was an early champion of it as a single varietal, and has produced it every year since.
Schreiner penned his approval after a vertical tasting of the Reserve Cabernet Franc vintages from 2005 to 2011, also writing that Hester Creek is now one of the best wineries in the Okanagan. Of the now-available 2011, Schreiner notes it has aromas of blackberry and raspberry, with flavours of blackberry and red currant. I’ve just returned from four days up in the South Okanagan digging Banée, the annual celebration of the area’s of food and wine, and a visit to Miradoro, the new restaurant attached to Tinhorn Creek starring the skills of former Aurora Bistro owner/chef Jeff Van Geest.
The new restaurant is a welcome injection to a section of the valley that hasn’t enjoyed great fortune in the food department. Van Geest is cranking out high quality Mediterranean chow, everything from housemade chorizo to superb pizzas. It’s rare to get a capable room with a view even in Vancouver (too many nautical pubs and deep-fried clusterfucks), so to see another one shining up there was awesome. The patio overlooks the winery’s cool amphitheater (starring K-OS and The Odds this summer), and on a still clear day one can probably see as far as Guatemala.
Van Geest’s supper, paired with Tinhorn wines from start to finish, was outstanding. I missed his short tenure at Diva, so it had been a couple of years since I’d eaten any of his food. There may have been some inconsistency to his pizza crust (scant variant thinness from pie to pie), but damn if it wasn’t still first class (made with “00″ Caputo flour). I haven’t been to the Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl for over a year, but if memory serves, Miradoro has it beat. From the chorizo consomme with peas and grilled amputation of octopus to the forno chicken and sweet closing of deep fried custard, Jeff was ably swinging for the fences, and it was great to be a fence. It was also a fine thing to see owner Manny Ferreira happy about it. It was a long time coming (a few years in the making, for sure), but it was well worth the wait. Read more

Miradoro Restaurant is British Columbia’s premiere winery restaurant. A joint venture between Tinhorn Creek and restaurateur Manuel Ferreira (of Vancouver’s famed Le Gavroche), Miradoro is a destination to truly experience the best of B.C.’s wine country. Perched on the picturesque Tinhorn Creek estate, on the famed Golden Mile, Miradoro (which roughly translates to “Golden View” in Iberian) offers sweeping views of the scenic South Okanagan Valley and features Mediterranean-influenced cuisine that showcases the best local ingredients the region has to offer.
Executive Chef Jeff Van Geest, works closely with local farmers and producers to make Miradoro a restaurant that pays homage the bounty of the Okanagan. The menu draws inspiration from countries like Spain, Portugal and Italy – cuisines designed to pair perfectly with wine. The food is local, rustic, simple, straightforward and seasonal; and reflects Chef Van Geest’s belief that there’s nothing better than simply, but well-prepared ingredients from our local fields, forests and ocean.
Miradoro’s wine list, developed by General Manager and Sommelier Justin McAuliffe, showcases the award-winning wines of Tinhorn Creek, with both current and rare library releases available. The list also includes a hand-picked selection of standout wines from other wineries across B.C.
The 4,000 square foot restaurant features 65 seats indoors and 65 seats outdoors on a wrap-around deck. Ample use of natural woods and cork creates a room that is simple, yet elegant, and lets the food, wine and view be the stars of the show. Two full walls of glass ensure that every seat in the house can experience Miradoro’s panoramic view of the South Okanagan Valley, and an open-concept kitchen with a Wood Stone open-hearth oven as its centerpiece gives guests a great view of the action in the kitchen as well.
The design, construction and operation of Miradoro all reflect Tinhorn Creek’s commitment to sustainability. For example, the large overhanging roof reduces energy consumption by blocking the sun on hot summer days, while still letting in ample natural light. Before breaking ground, Tinhorn Creek worked with The Land Conservancy to identify native plant species to be replanted after construction, minimizing the impact to the natural habitats surrounding the restaurant. And in the restaurant, water is filtered and carbonated on-site to eliminate the shipping of bottled water and all biodegradable kitchen waste is composted for use in Tinhorn Creek’s vineyards.
Miradoro is open for lunch (11:30 am to 3 pm), afternoon tapas (3 pm to 5:30 pm) and dinner (5:30 pm to 9 pm) seven days a week. Miradoro is open ten months a year – closing in January and February.
