ABOUT The Union

Opened in January 2012, The Union Bar is an 80+ seat restaurant and cocktail lounge straddling Chinatown & Strathcona. Chef Lisa Henderson offers up a menu of shareable plates and bowls, inspired by the flavours of Southeast Asia, while barman Arthur Wynne uses ingredients sourced from neighbouring Chinatown to infuse his inventive cocktails. The interior is a modern yet eclectic design by Evoke International Design, with reclaimed barn board, exposed concrete, large-scale light fixtures, custom designed wood tables & benches, and graphic details highlighting the surrounding neighbourhood.

DINER: A Sneak Peek Inside Strathcona’s “The Union” On The Verge Of Opening Day

December 23, 2011

by Andrew Morrison | A walk past The Union location in Strathcona (219 Union off Main) the other night showed it nearly finished. The southeast Asian project from the people behind Habit Lounge and The Cascade will seat 84 when it opens between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. As you can see from the shots below, the place is looking awesome (yes, those are lyrics from Jimi Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic” around the kitchen window). Further details on the upcoming restaurant and bar here.

DINER: Habit & Cascade Folks To Open New Southeast Asian Restaurant, “The Union”

September 29, 2011

by Andrew Morrison | I made mention of The Union in an “opening soon” piece for the paper many, many months ago (285 days ago to be exact), but work on it was delayed due to the typical snafus associated with brand new buildings. The restaurant, due this December (fingers crossed), is located at 219 Union St. at the foot of the new V6A building where Strathcona connects with Main St. on Union St. at the southern reach of Chinatown (next to the Jimi Hendrix shrine). The crew behind it are the same folks that brought us Habit Lounge and The Cascade further up Main, namely Nick Devine, Wendy Nicolay, Nigel Pike, David Nicolay and Rob Edmonds. Read more

“Latitude” On Main To Re-Open March 3rd With Expanded Menu And “Devine” Drinks

February 26, 2011

We broke the news a couple of weeks ago that Latitude was merging with The Cascade Room and Habit Lounge (it’s a family affair) and would shut down for some slight design tweaks by the room’s original aesthetes and an expansion of chef Lisa Henderson’s Pan-American menu. We’ve been told that both are coming along nicely. It seems as if the bar program is now getting the most attention. Nick Devine – who created the cocktail lists at both Habit and Cascade – has created a new cocktail list and will be behind the bar when the refreshed Latitude re-opens, serving all the classic Latin cocktails (think Margaritas, Caipirinhas, Mojitos, Batidas, Pisco Sours, Daiquiris, etc), and to complement them, Henderson is plating a selection of “bar forward” arepas dishes.

Re-opening day is scheduled for this upcoming Thursday, March 3rd.

Vancouver, BC | The Cascade Room’s Nick Devine follows-up his tremendously successful Winter Olympics “bobsled shots” with the introduction of the “sub bench shots” for this summer’s FIFA 2010 World Cup. The “sub benches”, inspired by 16 of the 32 competing nations, hold four shots each and come complete with a trivia card for each country. Read the stats, test your knowledge and Drink Up!!

The off-field competition at The Cascade Room should be just as intense as the on-field exploits in South Africa, with England, South Africa and Australia all represented at the bar (sorry Canadians and Nigel, Cascade’s lone Welshman – maybe 2014). Cascade’s full World Cup schedule is available for download at: www.thecascade.ca. Read more

“Habit Lounge” Rises From The Ashes To Be Born Again On Main

September 14, 2009

IMG_5845

Way back on December 7th (as FDR noted, a day that would most certainly live in infamy), good ‘ol Habit Lounge on Main Street rather suddently burst into flames. We broke the sad news: “No one was hurt, thank goodness. According to the fire department, the fire started in a kitchen garbage can in the wee hours. Co-owner Nigel Pike got a call at 6:30am and found the place filled with black smoke. All that lovely orange covered in black soot!”

We are now happy to report that – nine months later – they’ve finally opened and it’s dead sexy, with shades of your grandpa’s basement circa 1976 (if your grandpa was Hugh Hefner without the creepy). Read more

About The Cascade Room

cascade_1

The Cascade Room was created as a simple nod to the British Pub. Chef Travis Williams offers a menu with straightforward and honest food at good value.

Wholesome, quality ingredients are featured: from wild seafood products that follow the Ocean Wise mandate, to “in house” pizza doughs and al dente pasta, we strive to purchase our products from BC based suppliers, in particular from the Mount Pleasant area, continuing our commitment to the neighbourhood. The incredibly popular daily “meat and potato” specials sell out fast, so come early!

The Cascade Room features an aggressive cocktail program by Nick Devine, steeped in tradition rather than trend. Having worked in Vancouver, San Francisco and London (including a stint in Oxford with Cascade co-owner Nigel Pike), Nick’s philosophy can be summed up as follows: “Whatever you desire, whether it’s a rickey, a daisy,  a julep, a sling, a sour, a flip, a toddy or a nog…we’ll endeavour to make it”. Additionally, there are several options on tap, including pub-standard Guinness and our own Cascade Lager. The wine list is varied and affordable, serving a fine complement to Chef Williams’ offerings.

Local design and branding firm Evoke International created an ambience reminiscent of the British Pub, but with a modern twist.

About Habit Lounge

habit_7

Serving Main Street proudly since 2005, Habit is now open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In a setting reminiscent of a 1970’s Canadian Rec Room, Chef Tristan Burley has created a menu full of nostalgia yet updated to meet today’s demand for food respectful of location and quality. Kind of like the food your Mom made when you were a kid – if she could cook!

The Breakfast menu is classic in interpretation and satisfying in taste, offering diners a selection of hearty egg dishes from Flat Iron Steak & Eggs and Back Bacon Eggs Benny to Huevos Rancheros with its house smoked tomato salsa. Wash your breakfast down with our daily feature Mimosa or Breakfast Martini Bento Box. Sandwiches such as the BLTA and a Venison Sloppy Joe, along with house-made soups, salads and our ever-popular Carrot and Brie Perogies, make up the lunch menu. Locals flock to Habit for our evening menu, including favourites such as our Albacore Tuna Casserole, House-made bacon wrapped Lamb Meatloaf, Steak Frites and our daily Oceanwise Choice Fish of the Day. Our goal is to use free-range eggs, humanely raised meats and sustainable seafood in the preparation and execution of our menu.

Co-owner/bar manager Nick Devine has imagined a cocktail list inspired by a handful of recognizable retro cocktails (which have traditionally been made with inferior ingredients) and redesigned them using premium, fresh and natural ingredients. Classic recipes like the Blue Hawaiian and Tequila Sunrise have been deconstructed with the components and laid out ‘bento box’ style, along with shaker and glass, so that you can shake and pour your own cocktail. Why? Because drinking is fun! Additionally, a large selection of over 20 Canadian Whiskeys are available to satisfy any particular thirst, whether consumed neat, on the rocks or in a cocktail.

Our selection of draught and bottles from BC microbreweries includes Crannog’s ‘Back hand of God’ from Canada’s only certified organic farmhouse microbrewery or Howe Sound Brewing’s ‘Baldwin & Cooper’ Best Bitter. Habit is a proud sponsor of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).

Local design and branding firm Evoke International was commissioned to fashion the 70-seat room concept of 70’s Canadiana, creating a gathering place where the neighbourhood comes to meet.
