DINER | Seigo Nakamura (Miku, Minami) To Open Downtown “Gyoza Bar” This Summer


by Andrew Morrison | Seigo Nakamura the owner of the Miku and Minami restaurants, has just taken possession of 620 West Pender St. in downtown Vancouver. Instead of continuing on with the aburi-sushi theme of his previous eateries, this newly renovated 2,700 sqft space will focus squarely on gyozas. Given Nakamura’s evident dedication to quality and doing things a little differently (Miku and Minami are both excellent originals), I trust that Gyoza Bar – as it’s being called – will be in the business of stuffing the little Japanese dumplings with all manner of unique and interesting flavours. I’ve been assured that there will be other items on the menu as well, but gyozas – ahem – will be king. Bonus: wine, sake, and beer on tap. Anticipate an opening at some point in June, 2014.

Vancouver, BC | Aburi Restaurants is excited to welcome Koji Kawakami, 19th generation president of Yoshi no Gawa sake brewery in Japan, to Vancouver at the end of October to host two exclusive, six course sake-pairing dinners at Miku (Tuesday, October 29th) and Minami (Wednesday, October 30th) restaurants starting at 6:30 pm. Yoshi no Gawa is one of the oldest sake breweries in Japan and has been in operation since 1548.

“It is not everyday that we have an esteemed sake maker in town to present a dinner, especially two dinners,” explains Miki Ellis, Aburi Restaurants sake specialist and North America’s youngest accredited sake specialist. “Yoshi no Gawa’s sake is representative of the Niigata region in Japan – light, clean flavours that offer diversity with different types of foods. We expect two great evenings of sake and food.”

Vancouver, BC | Seigo Nakamura’s brand new Miku Restaurant has finally opened its doors in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour neighbour today (liquor license pending and should be resolved by end of the week). Located at 70-200 Granville Street, the restaurant boasts a stunning waterfront view with a wrap-around patio, U-shaped bar, and beautiful hand-painted murals by Japanese artist Hideki Kimura. Alongside its popular Aburi “flame-seared” sushi is a menu that has more fresh seafood options, bar dishes, and cocktails and sakes.

“Many of our customers have called and emailed in the past months to ask when we were reopening again and the team at Aburi Restaurants Canada are so excited to unveil the new Miku to the public,” explains Nakamura, President and Owner of Aburi Restaurants Canada. “This Miku is much more spacious than the old location. We can’t wait for guests to try our new menu items while gazing out at the view or simply sipping on a sake cocktail at the bar.”

Vancouver, BC | Aburi Restaurants Canada Ltd, operating as Miku Restaurant, announces it will take over the lease of Goldfish Seafood & Chops, located at 1118 Mainland Street. A new restaurant with a different concept, named Minami, is expected to open in Summer 2012. Goldfish’s last day is Sunday, February 5, 2012, after completion of Dine Out Vancouver.

Miku is a celebrated Japanese restaurant in Vancouver, and is popular with both residents and tourists visiting the city. It is known for innovating the Aburi or sear-flamed style of sushi, which is the act of applying fire directly on the fish to enhance the natural flavours. This technique, paired with specialty sauces and non-traditional Japanese ingredients make the perfect complement to the unique taste of fish.

“We look forward to expanding the Miku brand in one of Vancouver’s most vibrant neighbourhoods and bringing Aburi to the Yaletown community in Summer of this year,” explains Takuya Motohashi, Vice President and Executive Chef of Aburi Restaurants Canada Ltd. “Bud Kanke is a legend in the restaurant business. It has been a pleasure working with him on finalizing the details.”

Kanke Seafood Restaurants has founded, opened, and operated 11 restaurants in the past 40 years. Kanke, who is now 72, is contemplating retirement. To assist staff and management with as smooth a transition as possible, the company is providing employees with a generous severance allowance.

“We wish to thank our many diners who have enjoyed their guest experience and supported and frequented Goldfish over the years,” says Bud Kanke, Proprietor of Kanke Seafood Restaurants Ltd. “I am very proud of our Goldfish Team and what we have achieved when we first introduced Yaletown to West Coast seafood cuisine with Pacific Rim flavours in 2007.
