News from Scout supporter The Refinery

Vancouver, BC | The second installment in the Refinery’s whiskey seminar series is a definitive look at Bourbon Whiskey. As it has claimed many people’s hearts in the past, let us indulge your palates on Tuesday February 2, 2010. What better host than one of Vancouver’s most respected “bourbon” personalities, Maker’s Mark Brand Ambassador, Mr. Ron Oliver. Along with the obvious inclusion of Maker’s Mark, Mr. Oliver will be guiding guests through three other expressions in the Maker’s Mark portfolio, including “1 Day Old” through to “Over Mature” – this will effectively showcase the evolution of Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whiskey. Additionally, Mr. Oliver will guide guests through two other American whiskey styles. As informative as it is delicious, the whiskey seminar will be accompanied by some fantastic cheese, charcuterie, and other goodies The Refinery is well known for. Oh, and let’s go completely overboard and start everyone with a cocktail. Read more

‘Tis The Season To Drink A Lot Of Whiskey…GOOD Whiskey

November 16, 2009

The Refinery and Cask Strength present "Immaculate Conception" an evening dedicated to joys of whiskey and food.

News from Scout supporter The Refinery

December 8th 2009 marks a very special evening. Similar to the Whiskey 101 classes that local aficionado Andrew Starritt is known for, this event will combine Andrew’s unique talent in sourcing some of the most obscure whiskies (five for this event), while Refinery Chef Michael Carter creates a 5 course menu using whiskey in thoughtful ways. We will begin the evening with an award-winning whiskey cocktail by Refinery’s General Manager & Mixologist, Lauren Mote. This event is not for the faint-at-heart. There will be bundles of whiskey consumption, a sensory-overload, and a huge educational component. Read more

Vancouver’s Best Bartenders Let Loose With Beer And Booze

Yesterday, local bartenders were asked to craft cocktails incorporating beers from Whistler Brewing Company in a timed competition. Held at The Refinery, the showdown included efforts from fifteen barkeeps in all, which meant my palate was in for something of a rude ride for over three hours (I was judging). Much fun was had, and some of the drinks were very impressive. Here’s what it looked like from my end, a recap of who made what with which ingredient and how it looked through a blender of tasting notes and photos. Thirsty? Giddy-up… Read more

The Feel

The Refinery is a food primary establishment, with a seating capacity of 75. Charcuterie, both made on site and off, cheese, cured and fresh seafood, fresh breads, antipasti are just some of the colourful and delicious offerings available everyday. A listing of daily features from flatbreads, salads, preserves, jams, jellies, and pickled vegetables add a touch of passion to each plate. Though our concept can be misinterpreted by the common diner, The Refinery also offers a selection of hot entrees inspired by some of the timeless classics in modern gastronomy, like braised beef shortribs, gnocc’n cheese, homemade risotto and pastas – our entrees move through seasonal availability as well. Please see our full menu for the current offerings. Additionally, a thoughtful wine list focusing on small lot production and boutique BC wineries, and a selection of well made craft beers from British Columbia on draft and in bottle share the shelves with unique brews from around the world. The food program is maintained and seasonally adjusted by Chef Kirk Morrison and his talented crew.

The Refinery gained most of its success in the last 36 months from the award-winning cocktail program. Recognized as one of the most innovative programs in Canada, The Refinery program was developed by Mixologist Lauren Mote from 2009-2011. Our current bar manager, Graham Racich, one of the brightest stars from 2010′s Cocktail Kitchen Series, maintains and develops the Refinery cocktail program. At the Refinery, we make almost everything from scratch – from our popular house-bitters program, to sweet/dry vermouths to non-alcoholic ingredients like grenadine, vegetable waters, juices, purées, preserves, naturally fermented sodas, powders and sweet pickled fruits and vegetables. A large emphasis of the Refinery’s program is the distinct use of local product. The Refinery bar team use local and sustainable products wherever possible, and feel that educating our guests and peers about the importance on relying on our edible surroundings rather then imports is the only way to go. BC in general seems to be at the helm of local food reliance in Canada, so it’s only fitting that the most successful bar and restaurant programs follow the same practices. You may find it funny, but almost everyone that works at the Refinery is a bartender.
