Inside The Kitchen At “Maenam” For Some Gratuitous Food Porn

A good friend of mine, Bobby from Tofino, is here staying with us for the Olympics. He’s been keeping himself busy by – among other things – picking up shifts with Angus in his kitchen at West 4th’s Maenam (my pick for the best new restaurant of the year). When I went there last night to join up with him after work, there wasn’t room enough for me to wait in the dining room or at the bar. They allowed me to hold tight in a little corner of the kitchen, where I fiddled with my new camera, a Canon T1I. And thus, the gratuitous food porn above. If it could reproduce smells half as well as it does imagery, I’d likely be felled, happy.

Owen Sips Lightly On The Wood At Kitsilano’s New “Maenam”

Maenam barman Ben de Champlain

by Owen Lightly – A few days after the opening of Maenam, I went and hung out with their bar manager Ben de Champlain to check out a couple of the new cocktails.

Like me, Ben comes from the Island. He’s done a lot of traveling and has they eyes of a man who has seen a few things (ask him about his pilgrimage on the “El Camino de Santiago” in Spain).

Ben was a chef for years and only recently got into the bartending racket. His friends Steve (Corner Suite) and JT (Market), who were running the bar at Boneta at the time, knew he was looking to mix things up, so they offered him a shot on the wood there. Now, I’ve seen the bar at Boneta in full swing, and know how crazy it can get, so for him to jump in (and excel) is a testament to his skill and work ethic – all those years behind the line in a hot kitchen must have helped. The Night Before At The Highly Anticipated “Maenam” On 4th

img_9920

After reading Owen’s post about the lobster salad he enjoyed at Maenam the other night I arranged to go down, snap some pictures, and try some food before they opened for the public. A friend and I blazed through 10 dishes in chef Angus An’s kitchen, everything from intensely aromatic oxtail soup and fiery green curry with halibut cheeks to crispy pork belly and probably the best pad Thai I’ve ever had, all washed down with cold, refreshing bottles of Hoegaarden…

I suspect they’ll be open for dinner tomorrow. Officially, however, it’s Friday. Check out the full menus on their website here. Think Vij’s but Thai with Rangoli prices.

Break a leg, folks. Kick some Kits ass.

Owen Lightly Scores The First Taste Of “Maenam” On West 4th

Angus An (at left) is on the verge of opening "Maenam", the Thai restaurant replacing Gastropod at 1938 West 4th

by Owen Lightly – Some time next week, Maenam will open in the former Gastropod space on West 4th Avenue. Chef and owner Angus An’s focus is shifting from fine dining to authentic Thai. The original plan was to find a second location for his Thai venture, but after seeing business slowly decline over the past year and with a bleak forecast for the coming months in the high-end market, An decided to pull the plug on the “pod” for the time being. Gastropod will live on in the catering and private-dining realm though, with an eye to re-opening at a new location in the future (watch An explaining the move below). Read more

Kitsilano’s Gastropod To Go Thai As “Maenam”

The award-winning Gastropod restaurant on West 4th will close at the end of April and reopen two weeks later as Maenam, an authentic Thai restaurant that will have the same attention to detail in the service and a similarly amped wine and cocktail program. Gastropod will continue as a private catering company. Who knows, it might be re-born somewhere else down the line. Read more

About Maenam

maenam3

The cuisine at Maenam is rooted in balancing intense fresh flavours with seasonal ingredients and locally sourced products, while always considering the context within which these dishes would traditionally be enjoyed. Simplicity, innovation and balance are the key ingredients in chef Angus An’s philosophy behind the authentic Thai dishes served at Maenam. With inspiration found in continuous travel, the menu at Maenam is ever-changing but always served with Thai flare and enjoyed in its traditional context, be it family style dining or riffs on Thai street food.
