Vancouver, BC | November 8th, 2011 marks the launch of a new cocktail competition and dining experience from Kale & Nori Culinary Arts. The concept of cocktail and food pairings has become extremely popular, and since 2010, Lauren Mote’s original “Cocktail Kitchen” competition at The Refinery produced energetic statistics: 168 original cocktails produced, 56 bartenders invited, 224 bottles of spirits poured, 14 different sponsors. This city’s brightest bartenders – a collaboration of seasoned veterans and young apprentices – took their place behind the wood and produced magic for 1680 total guests in 14 months. We are proud to introduce you to “Bittered Sling Bistro” – a bi-monthly food and cocktail pairing competition dedicated to pushing the boundaries of cocktail craft presented at the beautiful Legacy Liquor Store in Olympic Village, Vancouver. This is the final month of qualifications for bartenders before the finals begin in September. This is also the final season of Cocktail Kitchen.
This weekly series promotes creativity and innovation within the realm of restaurant bartending. Now celebrating our one year anniversary, the Cocktail Kitchen Series has moved 30 unique bartenders through the competition as they play host to a sold out crowd on their designated date. Every Wednesday throughout August, a different bartender will attempt to pair three courses with three cocktails*. In light of the sad events that happened last week throughout downtown after the Canuck’s Game 7, we decided to throw a Customer Appreciation Party at The Refinery this Friday June 24, starting at 4:00pm. Vancouver residents did such an incredible job cleaning up the city, including our neighbourhood at Granville & Helmcken/Davie, and it’s time to celebrate how much we all appreciate you! Barkeeps To Gather In Gastown For Night Of Bourbon & Insight

Have you ever been to a Pecha Kucha night? It’s that thing where the city’s most innovative and creative people are invited up on stage in front of hundreds (sometimes thousands) of people to share the things that inspire them during a talk and slideshow. It’s awesome, invariably insightful fun, and they’re happening all around the world, even here in Vancouver (thanks to our good friends at Cause+Affect).
The story-telling format lends itself well to every cut of life, so with that in mind the folks at The Bacchus Group and Buffalo Trace Bourbon have put together an evening of their own – Wednesday, January 19th from 6:00pm (sharp) to 9pm – to celebrate Vancouver’s thriving cocktail culture. It is called Spirits and Culture: A Thinking and Drinking Event, and it all goes down at The Diamond in Gastown. Then and there, seven well known personalities from the local spirits scene will each present a talk, using 20 slides of their choice apiece to weave their personal narratives. Read more

Vancouver, BC | The Refinery’s Cocktail Kitchen Series welcomes four “bartender finalists” in January, 2011. As the competitors quickly approach the wood for their chance to win the first ever Cocktail Kitchen at The Refinery and a trip to California, we can’t help but look back at the highlights from the four finalists’ performances over the past 6 months.
During July’s launch month, David Bain of South Granville’s West Restaurant caught guests off guard with his cocktail “The Triple Threat”. This well thought out and super creative cocktail used several different techniques and components. Guests were impressed by the fresh-foam which sat atop a simple four ingredient cocktail, including a homemade triple-chili infused heated agave nectar, The Refinery’s chocolate sweet vermouth, citrus and raw cacao nib Hornitos Reposado Tequila. This cocktail was an instant winner with its pairing of Driftwood Whitebark and Achiote marinated flank steak. Read more
