GOODS from Laughing Stock Vineyards
Penticton, BC | Laughing Stock Vineyards is pleased to announce that the Futures Offering for Portfolio 2012 will be available as of February 1st, 2014. This vintage release is particularly noteworthy as it’s the 10th vintage release of Portfolio, our flagship Bordeaux inspired blend. As well, this Futures release will be the last time that Portfolio Futures are offered to the public, as the winery has decided to cap the growth of this program by limiting future offers to members of their Preferred Share Wine Club.
In the investment industry, you aren’t really taken seriously as a money manager until you can post 10 year performance numbers. For the past decade, Portfolio has routinely won top accolades from wine competitions and wine critics alike. And this 10th vintage will be a chart-topper from the stellar 2012 growing year.
“2012 was one of the best growing conditions we’ve had in the Okanagan,” says David Enns, owner and winemaker. “The trial blends we are assembling show a suppleness, opulence and intensity of fruit that will be hallmarks of this great vintage. A stunning wine to cap a decade of winemaking.”
The Futures Offering provides early subscribers with the option to secure orders of Portfolio for a limited time at an advantageous price of $35 per bottle before it is released to the public later this fall. Release price for Portfolio 2012 will be $45 per bottle.
Due to the growing demand for Portfolio, the winery is planning to cap the growth by limiting Portfolio Futures purchases to just Preferred Share Wine Club members in 2015. Thus this is the last year that Futures is offered to the public during the month of February. Only by becoming a shareholder of our Preferred Share Wine Club for Portfolio Futures by February 28, will members then be guaranteed to receive Futures pricing on upcoming vintages. Portfolio Futures Wine Club memberships are limited to 500 members, which is only 100 more than the current membership. Wine club members receive other shareholder benefits like FREE shipping across Canada (to most major markets). We are looking forward to assembling this year’s Portfolio and have a number of 10th Vintage events including a 10 –year vertical tasting in planning stages to celebrate this top decile performer. GOODS from Laughing Stock Vineyards
Penticton, BC | In order to make great wine, you need great tools, this year’s winemaking tool chest has expanded to include 2 Amphora’s imported direct from Chianti, Italy. An ancient way to make and store wine from Greek and Roman days, Amphora’s are made of clay which helps the wine breathe during fermentation and storage. This will accelerate the maturity of the wine and we are also expecting some effect on the colour. So far this harvest, it is the fermentation home for a blend of Viognier, Rousanne & Marsanne. Part of a research project involved 4 different fermentation methods, it’s a way to explore these winemaking tools and the various flavours and textures of each.
Having completed 10 harvests since leaving the investment industry, Laughing Stock’s focus is no longer in growing the winery production, but rather increasing quality each year. This year’s vintage is looking stellar with the warm summer temps and extended Okanagan fall season. 10 tons to go! To see more pictures of Harvest 2013, visit our LFNG Facebook page. Read more

by Amorita Bastaja | At the start of the month I headed up to Naramata, just outside of Penticton, for a weekend visit to Laughing Stock winery. The owners, David and Cynthia Enns, greeted my husband Scott and I with wine in hand and the threat of work in the vineyards. A tour by David was perfectly timed, as a violent pump-over was taking place on the newly harvested Malbec. We leaned cautiously over the railing to look into the open-top fermenters (a face full of carbon dioxide rising is not a good idea). The Malbec hadn’t yet reached its capacity. The fermenting grape juice was being sloshed over its cap (the stalks and skins that sit on top due to rising gas) through a large tube. It bubbled and foamed, exhibiting amazing purple colour.
The frequency of a pump over is dependent on the wine-maker… Read more

The sunshine has arrived on the Naramata Bench and so have our latest releases including:
Blind Trust Red 2007 | Just like a financial trust where executors have full discretion over the assets, our winemaker has full discretion over the wine blend so you’ll just have to trust us. HOWEVER, if you are really curious about what’s in the bottle, the assets are kept under wrap and seal (just peel back the capsule to reveal the blend). So we challenge you to blind taste the Blind Trust…without peeking. Read more
David and Cynthia Enns like to say that they wake up every morning with the goal of not living up to their winery’s name “Laughing Stock”. Things must have been running too smoothly for too long because they have decided to put their reputations on the line once again.
Their latest brave/foolish adventure is linking the price of their soon to be released Portfolio 2007 to the much-maligned TSX. If you purchase Portfolio futures at $35 per bottle (the early bird special price versus the usual $39 on release) you enter the TSX lottery.
For every 500 points the TSX drops by the time the wine is released in September 2009, Laughing Stock will give you back $1 per bottle or donate it to charity (not the banking sector) – their own little vine-ancial stimulus package.
I happened to be at the winery a couple of days ago and tasted some barrel samples of the 2007 and it is showing the usual high quality that Portfolio has come to represent. The futures go on sale Feb 17th and with this deal, there is little to lose. If the markets do continue to decline, you may well need a drink.
Ed. note: That’s Rhys and Cynthia in the photo at the 2008 Naramata Unfiltered Sommelier Bootcamp. I think they might be trying to yell at the vines or something. I remember that being a particularly inebriating day…
