Seen In Vancouver #337: On Enduring The Rain & Loving The Chow At Street Food City

January 24, 2012

by Andrew Morrison | Today was the first day of Street Food City, the three day food truck smorgasbord component of Dine Out Vancouver. Located right in front of the VAG, the laager-cloister of trucks made for a scene that sucker-punched our gullets and amped up our appetites, even in the rain (hooray for the covered tents with tables and chairs). While it would be nice to see the City arrange for something like this on every night of the summer, I’m grateful for any sort of baby step, and this looked and felt rather like a leap. The good chow was hot and flowing, so much so that some among the sellers had already sold out by the time we upped and left. Moral: whether the weather rules or sucks tomorrow (Wednesday) or the next day (Thursday), this is where you should be getting your bites on between 11am and 3pm.

Not the greatest day for hanging at the VAG, but whatever...So hungry we fell on our faces on the approach...Choices...A fish taco from Tacofino is a good place to startAnd you can say hi to Jason...And wait a bit...With others...and still others...Then go over to see Michael at Re-Up......where chili could be had...Double back to Tacofino to pick up some tortilla soup to go...Covet the seats under the umbrellas...Mmm, best sandwiches ever...Mmm, is that Soho Road chicken and naan?Pride at La BrasserieFor good reason...Peeps with kebabs...more peeps with kebabsWaiting for grilled cheeseYeah you are!Patience...there'll be more tomorrow

About La Brasserie:

lb_interior3

La Brasserie is a 35-seat Franco-German restaurant situated in the heart of Vancouver’s West End. Brothers Michael and Stephen Wiese have given Davie St. a cozy neighborhood gem that showcases the best of French and German comfort food. Classic dishes like Steak Onglet & Frites, Spicy Bratwurst & Sauerkraut, and Suckling Pig & Schupfnudel are served alongside a selection of over 30 hard-to-find European beers and a list of 12 wines, all available by the glass or the bottle. Dark wood tables and chairs, paired with deep red walls and leather banquets, with a stained-glass Tiffany lamp as a centerpiece, create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that blurs the line between fine dining room and neighborhood bistro.
