HONOUR BOUND: Super Chefs Cam & Dana Of “Joy Road” Cooking In Town This April 10

This sogginess will eventually give way to warmer, dryer, eat-outside weather. We promise. And when it does, no one in the province does “let’s eat outside” better than chefs Cameron Smith & Dana Ewart of Penticton’s Joy Road Catering. Their alfresco dining series goes down May through October all over the Okanagan Valley. If May or the Okanagan Valley seem too far away, we have a solution: On April 10th, Cam and Dana will be in town to cook one of their signature Cuisine du Terroir meals at Edible Canada on Granville Island. Don’t miss out.

Cuisine du Terroir. This is how Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart describe their concept – translated as food of the earth – and food with a strong sense of place. From their inception selling pastries at the farmers’ markets, to their position as the Okanagan’s preeminent caterers, Cam and Dana believe in using local ingredients for the simple reason that fresh tastes better.

Tuesday, April 10 | Edible at The Market (Granville Island) | $85 | Details

Field Trip Photo: Joy Road With JoieFarm On God’s Mountain Top

Pretty set up: a Joy Road catered supper paired with JoieFarm wines at God’s Mountain on the edge of Lake Skaha outside Penticton last night. Worthy of a run on sentence and then some and then some more.

On Joy Road And The Graphic Harbinger Of Sunshine To Come

jrc_postcard_2010_final_(3)Spring is the most frustrating of the seasons. Electric with sunshine one day and bitter with cold the next, Mother Nature at this time of year is a bitch. It’s now that I start to look for signs that the winter is indeed done, because neither the weather nor the calendar reassure.

There are the botanical signals, like cherry blossoms and lilacs, and the culinary cues, like Girl Guide cookies and spot prawns. There are also the craft fairs, garage sales and farmer’s markets. Oh, and spring dresses. I especially like those.

But the one thing that most solidly indicates to me that summer is nigh is my first sighting of Alfresco Vineyard Dining poster from Joy Road Catering (by local artist Dale Nigel Goble). Look for it at you local wine shop. It screams of summer, as if the Art Nouveau text and graphic work were testimonies from the soil itself. It’s no small coincidence that I first saw it on a beautiful day.

If you get the opportunity to get up to God’s Mountain to sup from chefs Cameron Smith & Dana Ewart’s genius, take it. In the meantime – hang on. Warmer days are coming.
