Cool Thing We Want #302: Bodega Ridge Weekend Via Obakki’s “Rainmaker Auction”

Jesse Keefer of Galiano Island’s Bodega Ridge has donated 2 nights stay (their cottages sleeps up to 3 couples) as an auction item in the upcoming Obakki Foundation Rainmaker Auction. Obakki hopes to raise $200,000 to help fund the drilling of 200 water wells in South Sudan this December (not next year or eventually, but next month). The auction will feature one-of-a-kind experiences as well as hundreds of signed auction items from well known musicians, athletes, celebrities and artists. Sure, you could bid on any one of the signed celebrity items (there are goodies signed by Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Beyonce, Katy Perry and more), but the item that really caught our eye was this weekend away. We’ve done it before, and it’s pretty darn cozy.

Postcards From The Crazy Trans-America Trail From Chambar Chef Nico Schuermans

What does any right thinking chef do after opening three successful businesses in six years and becoming a father, twice? He grabs his motorcycle and leaves, of course (well, if only for a while).

We usually do enough field trips on Scout, but Karri Schuermans, wife and partner of chef Nico Schuermans (think Beatty St.’s Chambar, Medina, Dirty Apron) sent in these envy-inducing photos of Nico and his good friend Jesse Keefer (of the awesome Bodega Ridge on Galiano Island) riding the famously grueling Trans-America trail, which starts in northeastern Tennessee and ends at the Pacific at the bottom of Oregon. As a big fan of the Long Way Round films (and Nico and Jesse), I can only imagine how awesome it has been for them. The trail is over 4,800 miles of mostly off-road riding, so it’s quite different from the relative coziness of a Route 66. According to Karri – who has been getting updates and snapshots from the road – their travels have included a lot of dirt and great people (save for some Uncle Daddy weirdness in Mississippi). Nico t-boned a cow on his bike (both were fine) and had to tow Jesse for a while after his clutch broke, but beyond that, they’ve endured a lot of amazing scenery and had a wonderful time. They hit Oregon yesterday and are ecstatic to have real coffee for a change. Karri reports that “they may make it back tonight if the weather holds up, and are looking forward to a great meal and beers!” We hope the last of their journey is a safe one, and welcome both of them home.

How To Get There: A nice drive, curvy drive on Galiano after a quick trip on BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Sturdies Bay (schedule)

Cost: $150-$200 a night (based on double occupancy).

Accommodation Type: Rustic cabins surrounding a multi-level lodge. Cabins are fully equipped with modern conveniences, cozy beds and full kitchens. Quiet like you wouldn’t believe.

Connectivity: Cell coverage OK. Tethering in cabins. Wireless in the lodge.

Things To Do: We were only there for 24 hours, but Bodega Ridge struck us as the kind of place that one wouldn’t really want to ever leave. Nonetheless, explore the island and hit up the quiet beaches after dodging the hundreds of deer that seem to play “get a load of me” games with the road. Most of all, however, you should stick within earshot of the dinner bell. Mook Sutton from Chambar & The Dirty Apron is on staff making breakfast, lunch and dinner for guests, plus cold, local beer is available and the coffee is roasted nearby.

Jesse Keefer, Proprietor

Prior to his involvement in Bodega Ridge, Jesse was a competitive cyclist competing in elite level races in both mountain and road biking. Jesse is one of the few athletes to earn medals in both road and mountain biking at the Canadian National Championships and won over 40 races in a career that spanned over 10 years, when he wasn’t injured, his bike wasn’t broken or he was upside down in a mud puddle. Jesse has been on Galiano for 6 years and has been visiting since he was a child. Please be sure to track him down and ask him where all the best areas are for outdoor fun on the island.

About Bodega Ridge

Even in the paradise that is the Gulf Islands, Bodega Ridge stands out for its spectacular location and natural beauty. Located near the Northwest tip of Galiano Island, Bodega Ridge is an idyllic setting for retreats, corporate events and weddings.
