Four Weekend Must-Dos For City Green Minds And Green Thumbs
March 26, 2010
We touched on some of these karma-boosting events in this week’s Scout List, but believe each is so awesome that they warrant some depth…
First up, the Lighthouse Sustainability Centre is offering a Green Urban Living lecture this weekend by Emily Jubenvill, the Community Gardens Coordinator for Vancouver Public Space Network. “Emily Jubenvill is more than just an environmentally minded Vancouverite. She is the greenest person in Canada, according to the results of an online contest launched last April by Simon Fraser University business professor Boyd Cohen. Emily will be sharing the ways she lives green in Vancouver – how far you can go when you live in an urban setting, a rented apartment, and run on a tight budget! Apartment gardening, worm composting, and cycling are just a few of the things she’ll be talking about.” So check it out and help yourself by helping everyone.
March 27 | 2 pm | Light House Sustainable Building Centre (2060 Pine) | $5 (pay at the door)
Second, get yourself over to Renfrew Park ton Saturday so you can protect and support diversity in local gardens. Check out open-pollinated, untreated fruit, flower, and veggie seeds grown without herbicides or pesticides. Bring your own pesticide-free, non-GMO seeds to trade or donate. Protecting plant diversity is a big karma score!
Mar 27 | 11am – 2pm | Renfrew Park Community Centre
Third, help make skylines around Metro Vancouver go dark to show support for governmental action on climate change. It might seem unimportant, even trite, to some, but mass action steers policy, if only eventually. The darker the better. Remember, before you power down, register to have your participation counted.
Mar 27 | 8:30pm – 9:30pm | Earth Hour | FREE
Fourth, roll up your sleeves and help build a Garden. A new Community Garden wants to take root in our new neighbourhood of Strathcona and it needs all sorts of help. Donate your time, vision, seeds and good ol’ elbow grease to get this project under way. The resulting garden is intended to enrich the lives of the whole community, so all hands on deck!
March 30 | 9am – 5pm | 420 Hawkes Ave (behind Rice Block Building) | FREE (but bring seed)
