HONOUR BOUND: Check Out The “Jiro Dreams Of Sushi” Documentary This Week

The acclaimed documentary, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, is now out in theatres amd if you’re the least bit interested in the art of cooking (or the fetishisation of perfection), you should go see the hell out of it. We know of many local cooks who were quick to check it out, and we’re hearing from them that it’s an inspiring jaw-dropper.

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI is the story of 85 year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. He is the proprietor of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant inauspiciously located in a Tokyo subway station. Despite its humble appearances, it is the first restaurant of its kind to be awarded a prestigious 3 star Michelin review, and sushi lovers from around the globe make repeated pilgrimage, calling months in advance and shelling out top dollar for a coveted seat at Jiro’s sushi bar.

Smoke Break #823: “Vigilante Vigilante” Documentary On The Battle For Expression

Check this trailer for Vigilante Vigilante, and upcoming film that documents the struggle between street artists and the few who take it upon themselves to blot out their work in Frisco/Oakland, CA.

A new breed of crime-fighter now stalks the urban landscape: the anti-graffiti vigilante. These dedicated blight warriors stop at nothing to rid their neighborhoods and cities of street art, stickers, tags, and posters. Yet several of these vigilantes have become the very menace they set out to eliminate. In their relentless attempt to stamp out graffiti, they’ve turned to illegally and destructively painting other people’s property. VIGILANTE VIGILANTE is the story of two filmmakers who set out to expose these mysterious characters and discover a battle of expression that stretches from the streets to academia.

Smoke Break #727: On The Silver Lining Of Home Foreclosures…

A new mini-doc called Cannonball shows how skateboarders in and around Fresno have been capitalising on the recession by riding all the abandoned pools in the backyards of foreclosed homes. It’s very similar to what the Lords of Dogtown kids did around Venice during the water shortages of the 1970′s and early 80′s.

Once upon a time, Fresno was the California Dream. Own a car. Own a house. Own a pool. Everyone wanted it and the wonderful world of credit made it all possible. But now, with the foreclosure monster running wild, the dream is dry. Thousands of pools are festering in the hot Central Valley sun. For most people this is tragic. But for some, it’s an opportunity.

Proof that every apocalypse has an upside…

Conor Oberst And The Making Of The Mystic Valley Band…

It might take a while to stream for weak connections, but it’s a great, hour long documentary and well worth whatever wait (start downloading and then boil your kettle). It tells the tale of Conor Oberst and the formation of the Mystic Valley Band, so pretty much better than whatever’s on TV. Read more

Type Face Nerds Go Wild

This is a riveting documentary on the history and relevance of one of the most commonly used and iconic type faces since Gutenberg did his thing. “Riveting” might sound like too strong a word to describe a film about letters, but if you’re at all interested in the mechanics of messaging then this is like porn.

the sexiest movie poster of all time...

the sexiest movie poster of all time...

I saw the trailer (above) last year on You Tube and thought it was a really cool premise for a doc, but then I promptly forgot about it. Months later when googling to find out which font Obama was using on Super Tuesday I found the trailer again above plus many clips (Obama’s font is in the flick, by the way. It’s called Gotham).

For a long time I hoped it would appear in my local movie store, to no avail. I remembered what kind of movie it was – not exactly Harold & Kumar.

Two months ago I gave in and sent away for it. When it arrived a few days later I watched it twice right out of the sleeve. I just watched it again, and was totally hooped.

For the next few days I won’t be able to walk down any street without trying to identify the fonts I see in the signage and branding that envelopes all of us, and I won’t be able to stop trying to discern what the marketers are trying to convey within each and every letter. Harold & Kumar can’t do that…nerdy nerdity nerd nerd. More clips below:

Watch The “The War Briefing”

October 29, 2008

Every television season, the PBS Frontline team goes deeper into stories the mainstream media only deals with in two minute segments. Their season opener, The Choice 2008, would have been a bit of a snoozer if you’re a rabid politico, though it did provide insights into the McCain and Obama that we seldom hear about. This was followed up last week by Heat, an in depth look at how corporations are dealing with climate change. Depressing, yes, but fascinating.

Last night I watched their newest, The War Briefing, and was totally blown away. It was an illuminating summation of the War in Afghanistan, sprinkled liberally with boots-on-the-ground footage. Deftly apolitical and as visually stunning as it was shocking, it was hard to turn away from. The trailer is above, but as is the case with all Frontline shows, you can watch the whole thing online here.
