LOOKCITY: The Forgetful Scout Reader’s “Please Save My Ass” Valentine Gift Guide
February 13, 2013
by Robyn Yager | So you’ve left your search for a Valentine’s Day gift to the very last minute and blown your chance to make a reservation at a restaurant because every eatery that is the slightest bit romantic is booked solid. Well, aren’t you just so darn adorable. Rather than just let you wander off to cruise the city in a panicky daze that results in a bent box of waxy chocolates, a bagful of cheap lingerie, or a stale Dominican cigar scotch-taped to the side of a bottle of J&B, I’ve put together a list of easy, last minute gift ideas that are sure to lessen the fury of the under-appreciated guy or girl in your life.
FOR YOUR GUY
Oscar’s Art Books (1533 West Broadway)
This coffee table book doubles as an amazing point of reference. Icons of Men’s Style highlights all the actors, writers, musicians, characters and artists that helped shape how we understand men’s style today. It’s a garment-by-garment guide, with point of origin, history, and how it’s worn today. Featuring the head honchos of men’s style: Michael Caine, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and Gregory Peck. You can get it over at Oscar’s Art Books on Broadway.
JD’s barbershop (235 Abbott Street)
Momentum Grooming (1237 Burrard Street)
Belmont (111 East Broadway)
Dominion Barbers (214 Abbott Street)
Guys like grooming as much as girls do. That is to say that they enjoy it when someone else does it and they have the luxury of sitting back and relaxing. JD’s Barbershop, Momentum Grooming, Belmont Barbers, and Dominion are all evidence to this. Why not chip in and buy your boyfriend/husband/man-friend a shave and a haircut for the day of love? He’ll feel great afterwards, and he’ll look awesome, too.
Brooks Brothers (1026 Alberni Street)
Duchesse Vintage (430 Columbia Street)
I could give you the option of buying your beau a bow tie, but that’s almost a given as far as guy’s gifts go, right? So why not switch things up in the men’s accessories department and gift them a pocket square instead? It’s the underdog of an ensemble. While the inclusion of the pocket square is often overlooked, when worn it’s rarely forgotten. You can go new – I suggest Brooks Brothers – a favourite of F. Scott Fitzgerald – or you could go vintage at Duchesse over on Columbia Street.

AWESOME THING WE ATE #884: Peanut Butter Parker Pie From “Cadeaux Bakery”
January 17, 2013
Feeling a little decadent? This beauty has a chocolate cookie crust, a chocolate glaze with caramelised peanuts, and creamy innards of peanut butter mousse punctuated by toasted peanut bits. Though it looks a little like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, don’t be fooled — the PBPP is 10 times bigger, 20 times tastier, 50 times richer (we measured), and wholly forkable. It’s also made with genuine maternal affection instead of weird things that even Jeremy Irons couldn’t pronounce. In other words, it’s freakin’ amazing and you should probably get yourself a slice right now because you work hard, you miss your Mom, and the sun doesn’t always shine on Thursdays.

AWESOME THING WE ATE #867: House-Made Ice Cream Sundaes From Cadeaux
July 11, 2012
by Michelle Sproule | The good folks over at Cadeaux Bakery on Powell St. (conveniently located around the corner from the No. 5 Orange) are now serving Vanilla Bean Ice Cream Sundaes. As you can see from the above shot, we tried the Strawberry and Caramel and they were both pretty awesome (as good as they look). The toppings will change according to what berries or fruits are in season, so we’re looking forward to trying blueberries and raspberries, then peach and cherry, then maybe even a blackberry toward the end of the summer. Caramel and fudge flavours are also available. $5 per and worth every penny.

AWESOME THING WE ATE #862: Canadian Maple Bacon Sticky Buns At Cadeaux Bakery
April 13, 2012
The gals down at Cadeaux Bakery are about to make your weekend. Eleanor Chow and Slavita Johnson read our appeal for bacon cinnamon buns and they (bless them) decided to come back with a kick-ass response. They’re now making Canadian Maple Bacon Sticky Buns. Peel away the outer ring and find a tasty strip of bacon within. Freakin’ mmmmm is right! Don’t expect to pick one up for a late afternoon snack, because these bad boys are going to sell out lickity-split. Psst! The best time to score is around 10am, when they’re still warm.

About Cadeaux
Cadeaux meaning “gifts” in French opened it’s doors in January 2012. It is owned and operated by two very passionate pastry chefs Eleanor Chow and Slavita Johnson. Inside the bakery you will find a small beautifully designed seating area where you can view the goods being hand crafted from start to finish while enjoying a slice of cake and a coffee. Cadeaux offers gourmet pastries and desserts that are high in quality and made with fresh local ingredients with no artificial additives or flavourings. Pre-packaged items are on the shelf like coconut macaroons, house made granola, chocolate truffles and paté de fruit. Cadeaux is open 6 days a week from Tuesday through Sunday. They also offer custom cakes, wedding cakes, restaurant/café consulting and wholesale services. Expect their menu to change with the seasons to keep things fresh and interesting.
DINER: Two Chambar Veterans Quietly Open Cadeaux Bakery On The Downtown Eastside
January 24, 2012
Early this morning, young Chambar veterans Eleanor Chow and Slavita Johnson finally (softly) opened their highly anticipated new Cadeaux Bakery at 172 Powell St. off Main St. in the Gastown/Railtown nexus (just around the corner from the No. 5 Orange). It’s bright and airy, with an open kitchen and smells that are straight up intoxicating. Offerings include a wide variety of baked goods like flawless croissants jammed with goat cheese and dill, chocolate, and marmalade; beautifully plump and bulbous brioche; quality turnovers; a selection of cookies; salted caramel brownies; and a whole lot more, including coffee, tea and cakes, and wedding cakes (soon to come). We took a whole lot of it home and scarfed like nobody’s business all morning. A grand opening is set for some time in March. Take a look below and enjoy a few involuntary spasms…
