“This is the place for those who want the best of everything without the taint of pretension.”
Vancouver Magazine

Tucked away on West 4th in Kitsilano is a legendary restaurant with a big reputation. For more than 20 years John Bishop has led the field in serving food that is organic, produced locally and sustainably. Many consider his eponymous Bishop’s to be Canada’s version of Chez Panisse. With a reputation like that, lots of people don’t realize that Bishop’s is also a cosy neighbourhood haven serving quality dishes at affordable prices. John and Chef Carlson work directly with fishers, producers and growers to source the pick-of-the-crop and menus change constantly to reflect this.

Dining at Bishop’s is like having dinner at the home of an elegant friend. From the warm reception that greets you to a table dressed in “soothing linen” surrounded by spectacular West Coast First Nations art, you know you will be pampered in this urban oasis of calm. The art on the walls a fitting backdrop to the culinary art of Chef Carlson.

Abel Jacinto presides over a wine cellar that features the best of British Columbia with hard-to- find and rare wines from around the world. The list is consistently updated.

Bishop’s is a proud foundation member of OceanWise and the Green Table Network.

Accolades

John and his restaurant have been honoured with numerous awards including:

Mobil Travel Guide Four Stars, 2008

Gold Medal, Cuisine Canada National Cookbook Awards 2008 (for Fresh)

Accolades

Vancouver, BC | From May 27 to June 19, South Granville’s Winsor Gallery (3025 Granville Street) plays host to a show by famed artist Alan Wood. The Bishop’s Garden – presents a new series of wood relief sculptures, collage and watercolours, based on the haven found in a close friend’s garden. That close friend is restaurateur John Bishop and that garden is the one found in the back of Mr. Bishop’s Point Grey home.

” It seems like I’ve known Alan for ever,” says Mr. Bishop. “In the early days, my wife Theresa and I would save up to buy his work. In turn, Alan and his wife Flora started coming to the restaurant and the friendship grew over the years.”

“When Flora passed away five years ago, I started to drop by John and Theresa’s home. They were always so welcoming and kind. I’d come and sit in the back garden – it became my refuge. One evening, I came for dinner. John and his son David had arranged eight of my pieces around the garden illuminated by candlelight. It was magic. That gave me the idea to try to capture and interpret the calm and happiness I have found there. This show is the result,” says Mr. Wood. “I named the series The Bishop’s Garden because I want to honour the role played by everyone in the Bishop family in creating this special space.”

Alan Wood is one of Canada’s leading artists. He has received international acclaim for his painting and is best known for his use of colour and for creating the outdoor environmental work, Ranch. Mr. Wood is a prolific artist and since 1962, has participated in many group and solo exhibitions in Great Britain, Europe, Canada, the United States and Australia.

News from Scout Supporter Bishop’s

(VANCOUVER) It’s a proven medical fact that sipping a moderate amount of red wine is good for your heart – it helps to reduce the amount of ‘bad cholesterol.’ The French have known for centuries that red wine is good for you – they aren’t concerned about ‘physical health’ per se, they are talking about being good for you, good for your life. A little wine promotes conviviality amongst friends and strangers, complements the flavours of food, encourages people to really enjoy a meal, causes you relax and has even been known to inspire poetry. Yes, a little wine is good for your ‘heart’ in all the senses of that word.

This September, Vancouver culinary legend, fabulous chef and good-hearted gentleman, John Bishop will lead a tour of the Okanagan Wine Country. For three days, participants will be wined and dined while touring vineyards and engaging in leisurely meals. As part of the tour, participants have a unique opportunity to learn more about wine and winemaking from Chef Bishop’s personal contacts within this fascinating world. Meeting growers, touring vineyards, talking to passionate wine-makers and dining on exquisite regional cuisine is at the heart of this of this ‘tour with heart.’ The best part – you have an idyllic ‘stay-cation’ while helping out the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC &Yukon. That’s right, this tour is a fundraiser. “My tour to India last year was a fundraiser for BC Women’s Hospital. I am hoping that with this tour we’ll be able to donate between $100 to $200 per participant to the Foundation,” comments Mr. Bishop.
