GOODS: Granville Island’s Dockside Brewing Co. Serving 2 Seasonal Brews For Summer

The GOODS from Dockside

Vancouver, BC | While the calendar still stays “Spring”, Summer is definitely in the air and Dockside Restaurant & Brewing Company is excited to announce the release of the summer seasonal brews from in our in-house brewery. Both of these beers are a perfect accompaniment to time spent on Dockside’s patio, voted “Best in Vancouver” in the 2012 Georgia Straight Golden Plate Awards.

The Haupental Hefeweizen was tapped earlier this week and is already being poured fresh daily in the restaurant and lounge. This classic, unfiltered German-style wheat beer is a great summer drink—in a traditional Hefe-style, it balances a low hoppiness with bursts of fruit and spice notes. It’s perfect for pairing with a wide variety of summer tastes like avocado, tomato and fruit salads.

This Friday, Dockside’s other seasonal, our famous Jamaica Lager, will be tapped—just in time for the Victoria Day long weekend. Contrary to what many think Jamaica Lager doesn’t have any connection a Caribbean recipe, it’s actually based on a traditional Mexican soda made with Hibiscus flowers, called “flores de Jamaica” in Mexico. Like the soda, our Jamaica Lager (pronounced hai-may-ca) is infused with Hibiscus flowers giving it a unique pink colour and subtle floral nose and flavour. While we love our IPA and Ales, nothing goes better with a hot summer day than a pint of Jamaica Lager. Details after the jump… Read more

DINER: Stewart & Durbach’s Little “Sardine Can” Opens Up On Powell Street In Gastown

by Andrew Morrison | Chef Andrey Durbach and Chris Stewart officially (if softly) opened The Sardine Can yesterday after a hectic Monday night dry run that saw three full turns of tables. I’ll go a few more times before I get into lengthy dish descriptions and broad analysis, but suffice it to say here and now that the little 20 seater at 26 Powell Street focuses on simple, unassuming Spanish tapas and pretty much nails both the requisite casual ambiance and bold flavour hooks. Durbach’s albondigas, patatas bravas (with soft fingerlings!), fish toasts, and so on are each represented well and are wholly pairable with Stewart’s select list of wines, beers and sherries. The prices are a little higher than I thought they’d be, but rents in Gastown ain’t cheap anymore, and I left feeling more sated than depleted (having torn through half the menu – doubling down on some items – and finding not a dud in the bunch). They’re open from 3pm until late and don’t accept reservations. If you go this week, and you should, be sure to bring cash. While they do accept credit cards and Interac, customers paying cash get 10% off of everything. Take a look at the before and after… Read more

Foreign Intelligence Briefing #403: “Devil’s Breath”, The World’s Most Dangerous Drug

Vice takes us to Bogota to check out “The Devil’s Breath”, a South American flowering plant that, when treated chemically in a way similar to cocaine, creates Scopolamine, a drug that renders (when it doesn’t kill) one outwardly sober but incapable of resisting the will of others.

The first few days in the country were a harrowing montage of freaked-out dealers and unimaginable horror stories about Scopolamine. After meeting only a few people with firsthand experience, the story took a far darker turn than we ever could have imagined.

Fascinating and horrifying. Three cheers for no thanks.

DINER: New Comfort Food Joint “Lily Mae’s” Opening This July In The Heart Of Gastown

by Andrew Morrison | A new restaurant called Lily Mae’s Comfort Cafe is under construction at 12 Powell Street (between The Diamond and The Sardine Can). It’s coming to us from keen first timers Jeff Jefkins and Armand Tencha. Jefkins wasn’t on site when I went by today, but Tencha was, and as you can see from the shot of him above, he’s an endearing beamer. He’s been out of the trade for half a decade doing some schooling (social work), but he was once upon a time a FOH staffer with stints at The Wedgewood and Lift (among others) on his CV. Together, they’re turning the small, 25 seat space (ex-Cafe Dolcino) into a casual room licensed for beer and wine with a European comfort food theme. From what I gathered, it sounded like Polish and Ukranian meets French, but don’t quote me on that. The construction is already well underway, and stripping has already revealed some lovely old bones, including three windows arched fetchingly with brick. I was particularly happy to hear and see that the tiny mezzanine loft was being restored and put to use (it will include some seating, a la Cork & Fin). It really appears as if they’re letting the age of the shell inform their design, which can be a beautiful thing when done properly. They’ve already purchased an old chandelier and have sourced several suitable antiques besides (bannisters, etc), so it sounds as if they’re moving in a cozy, old school direction. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Lily Mae’s (so named after Jefkins’ mother, an accomplished baker from Carmen, Manitoba) is scheduled to open before July’s end. Take a look…
