GOODS | New Corbie Fieldwalker Video Documents The Essence Of “Aloe Designs”

The GOODS from Aloe Designs

Vancouver, BC | Anyone who knows husband-and-wife team Caitlin and Owen Black, founders of landscape design studio Aloe Designs, has heard them describe their work, revealing their passion for what they do. But landscape design is essentially a visual expression, and the hard-working couple had been wanting to document and share their work in a way that allows people to really experience the spaces they create. Enter Corbie Fieldwalker, videographer extraordinaire. In under three minutes, he managed to capture the essence of Aloe Designs, expressing what they do and how they do it. This little video showcases some of company’s favourite projects to date. “It reminds us why we are in business for ourselves,” says Caitlin Black, landscape design consultant. “We’re truly so proud of these designs and the video shares them in such a magical way.” Press play above and learn more about Aloe Designs after the jump… Read more

The GOODS from Aloe Designs

Vancouver, BC | This month marks the official launch of World Reclaimed, a new line of home and garden goods from the folks behind Vancouver landscape design group Aloe Designs.

Using offcuts salvaged from deck, fencing, and other landscaping projects, as well as old-growth wood foraged from salvage yards and garage sales, owners Caitlin and Owen Black handcraft one-of-a-kind objects that are as beautiful as they are useful.

“World Reclaimed was born out of our love of working with our hands,” says Owen. “Our products reflect our respect for old-world craftsmanship, combined with our attraction to modern design.”

Responsible consumption and the re-use ethic are also driving forces: “Our aim is to create beautiful objects out of materials that, for one reason or another, were discarded or destined for the landfill,” says Caitlin.

The initial World Reclaimed product line includes breadboards, mason bee houses, bird feeders, end-cut coasters and “living desert” cactus planters. Caitlin and Owen plan to expand their offerings as new materials and reclaimed objects come their way.

Part of what makes this line special is that each object is unique to its origin. The seats of old chairs are sanded down and repurposed as bread boards, for example, while leftovers from an ipe-wood deck project, are transformed into mason bee houses.

All make welcome holiday and hostess gifts. Available at Walrus and, as well as at the Aloe Designs holiday party and pop-up shop launch of World Reclaimed, set for Thursday, December 5, from 6:00-9:00pm at the Aloe Designs studio. RSVP at by December 4th. Learn more about Aloe Designs after the jump… Read more

Vancouver, BC | While September is always a busy month for us, we were happy to be asked to be a part of the design events that are happening around town during IDSwest, namely the GE Monogram Dinner by Design: a fundraiser in support of the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. Dinner by Design on September 17th promises to be an amazing event, with lavish tablescapes created by renowned Vancouver-based designers including David Nicolay, Kelly Deck, and Craig Stanghetta. Taking inspiration from our recent trips to Palm Springs and the Napa Valley, we are bringing a farmhouse-rustic-meets-modern-desert esthetic to the venue. Our theme Desert Ranch.

A long harvest table sets the tone for the farmhouse room, which will be styled with vintage garden tools, herbs and edibles: a look that can easily translate to your own patio space. In the desert room, we’re highlighting the beauty of simple, modern design via architectural plantings of succulents and cacti, and playful organic finds (think branches, antlers, and even tumbleweeds!). Both rooms use low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants and feature modernist birdhouses from World Reclaimed: a little company that is being started by Aloe co-founder Owen Black. (Stay tuned for more info; we’ll tell you more about this fun side project in an upcoming months.) There are three ways to experience Dinner by Design, including a daytime public viewing, an evening cocktail party, and a swank dinner. You really ought to purchase tickets, we’ll be there the monday night and we’d love to have a drink with you! Read more

Vancouver, BC | It’s summer! Time for sun, sand, and sailin’. Yard sailing, that is. The folks at Aloe Designs love a good yard sale they can’t spot one without dropping everything to pop in, and July 13 they’re hauling out the lawn signs and setting up the refreshments stand as part of their ongoing effort to support the Richmond Schoolyard Society.

The garden-themed yard sale – a garden shed sale, if you will – features treasures including gardening books, hand and power tools, outdoor furniture, lawn toys, and decorative accessories. You never know: perhaps you’ll find just what you need to create an outdoor living space you love. Proceeds from the sale help the Richmond Schoolyard Society teach children about gardening and where their food comes from. Got something to donate? Great! Please contact us prior to the sale to arrange for drop-off. Read more

Vancouver, BC | If fresh, local edibles and a stroll around Trout Lake in the sunshine aren’t enough to tempt you to the Vancouver Farmers Market this spring, local landscape-design group Aloe Designs is offering free mini workshops geared to families. Aloe Designs is hosting a DIY station at the May 11, May 25, and June 1 Trout Lake markets to teach parents and kids how to grow food at home, support our native bee population, and improve biodiversity. Kids–and adults!–are invited to get their hands dirty and learn about gardening while creating something special to take home.

Designers will be on hand to chat about sustainable gardening methods and offer advice on incorporating kid- and eco-friendly garden activities at home. They are, of course, also happy to take inquiries about landscape design services. Details after the jump… Read more

About The Business

Quite simply, we believe that design matters. That good design can improve lives, cultivate community, and better our environment. Optimistic, perhaps, but it’s why we do what we do.

Aloe Designs helps our clients achieve outdoor living bliss. Yes, we said bliss. Working collaboratively with our clients, we convert boring backyards and problematic patios into outdoor living spaces that are easy to love and hard to leave.

We are a full-service landscape design group with a modern take on garden making, from initial consultation through design and installation. Throughout the process we are committed to using organic, sustainable resources and sourcing locally crafted goods. It’s all part of our vision of creating beautiful garden spaces that reflect our clients’ needs, personalities, and preferences— all while leaving the world a little bit better than we found it.

Move outdoors. Live outside
