We’ve invited Kitsilano’s newest restaurant, The Oakwood, to join our GOODS section as a recommended local business that is well worth checking out. They’re now a proud member of Scout, and as such we’ll be publishing their news front and center and hosting a page for them on our curated list of independent goodnesses. Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

WASHED OUT – “Before” – Within & Without (Sub Pop)

Loved the debut EP. Finally back with some new material, the king of all things chillwave slam dunks his first proper full-length, and Sub Pop debut Within & Without. I’m gonna call the cover art an “interesting choice”, but it fits the vibe. Smooth jams to listen to in bed late at night with your best gal. I’ll admit, I couldn’t get too far on this album when I first heard it, but a friend included “Before” on his summer mix, and it won me over. Laptop music at its best.

The Playlist

BRIAN ENO Drums Between The Bells (Warp)

Well this is cool. Ambient music’s biggest superstar lays down some kind of hotness and, what the—Rick Holland’s poetry is getting in on the act now. Bri-Bri is still one of the best after all these years. Worth a listen or ten. Read more

BON IVER – “Perth” – Bon Iver, Bon Iver (Jagjaguwar)

Eagerly anticipated follow-up to modern classic “For Emma, Forever Ago”. This one took us all by surprise and I think it ruffled a few feathers, but I enjoy it more with every listen. I honestly can’t tell if Vernon is singing in English most of the time, but I’m a fly in the face of reason: I don’t really care what the lyrics are. He’s got an angelic voice and I could probably listen to him sing about omelettes or internet porn and still get caught with tears in my eyes. I’d like to hear him go bigger and louder, like he does on opener “Perth”. I need some stadium status type stuff from this band. Read more

DINER: Award-Winning “West” Restaurant Hires Quang Dang As New Executive Chef

Today, the first day of NHL free agency, we’ve so far learned that Raffi Torres is off to the Coyotes and that the Canucks have re-signed Sami Salo and Chris Higgins. Not to be outdone, our local restaurant trade is making moves as well, beginning with the looming departure of first line center executive chef David Gunawan from South Granville’s venerable West to Belgium (in exchange for future considerations). To fill the captaincy, owner Jack Evrensel has booked the services of talented 1st round draft pick chef Quang Dang, who has successfully quarterbacked the powerplay at Diva in the Metropolitan Hotel for a little over a year now. No news as of yet on his replacement, but there’s no rush. Apparently, this deal doesn’t go through until the end of August. If that’s true, then there’s plenty of time for Diva to exploit free agency. There are several heavyweights currently available, and not many fine dining joints buying.

DINER: Gord Martin’s “Go Fish” Concept To Land In Recently Vacated Bin 942 Spot

by Andrew Morrison | Rumours have been swirling around as to what chef/owner Gord Martin has planned for his Bin 942 Tapas Parlour space at 1521 West Broadway ever since he shuttered it on June 11th.

Word has it that it’s going to be the second location of Go Fish, the supremely popular seafood shack on the False Creek seawall next to Fisherman’s Wharf. A lot of people love the original, myself included, so if this goes through it should be interesting to see if the concept translates well to brick and mortar, especially with Gord’s penchant for loud music and wild decor. I’m so used to eating this food outside in the sunshine while fending off gulls. Here’s hoping it works!
