Anh and Chi’s Vanessa Coupar Does The Dishes

A good bartender will always be able to recommend reliable food and drink establishments. This one gives you a map, too.

Anh and Chi’s Vanessa Coupar Does The Dishes

The Dishes is a new Scout column that asks Vancouverites to walk us through a map of their ideal day and night on the town. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night cocktails. Tax and tip included.

Today we get the goods from local bartender Vanessa Coupar, an Ontario import who toiled at such award-winning establishments as Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar and el Santo before becoming the Bar Manager at Main Street’s acclaimed Anh and Chi restaurant.

Good morning! What’s for breakfast/brunch?

Normally I’m a greasy diner breakfast kind of person, but Ask for Luigi’s weekend brunch is my go to! Put pork belly and an egg on pasta and call it breakfast? Yes please!

Where should we meet for coffee/tea?

I’m probably the only person who is a no fuss, black drip coffee and English breakfast tea kind of person. Caffe Mira is quaint, with friendly staff and comfy chairs. I can just sit and hang out for hours!

Now we’re hungry again. What’s for lunch?

I find myself eating lunch at Anh and Chi, even when I’m not working. I always get the Banh Xeo, a Vietnamese crepe made with turmeric coconut milk, made into lettuce wraps with fish sauce! (I really should try different things but hey, quality control you know?!)

Who has you figured out at Happy Hour?

Uva has a specially curated happy hour cocktail list, and “Scarlett” has their house blend vermouth. It’s a low proof refresher that allows you to keep going for the rest of the day!

What’s for dinner?

Mak n Ming. Small and cozy, and their 7 course menu with pairings from wine to sake and even beer and cider is so carefully crafted and thought out. I like not making decisions. You actually leave completely stuffed!

What’s for dessert?

Not having a massive sweet tooth, I always lean more towards cheese for my dessert. I love the selection at Grapes and Soda. Ttry some amazingly unique gin from Japan while you’re nibbling.

Where are you taking us for late night cocktails?

Vij’s Rangoli. They do a late night Happy Hour from 10pm – close (1am weekdays, 2am weekends) $4 draft beer, $5 glasses of wine and $6 classic cocktails, and even late night meals if you are still hungry! Their ever-changing cocktail menu is not to be overlooked. “Dr. Spaceman” is my absolute go to right now!

Sunja Link Does The Dishes

We already know that the local clothing designer and owner of Main Street boutique and spa, Sunja Link Body Shoppe, has discerning taste when it comes to the products and items that she puts on her body. So we're unsurprised that she's equally thoughtful about what food and drink she prefers to put into it.
