Ghost Sign

IMG_3523-(1)

Ghost Sign | Artifact in situ | Born of 19th century commercialism and often lost through redevelopment, a ghost sign is the often faded remnant of an old advertisement painted on the side of a building in the pre-billboard era. They are typically discovered upon demolition of later-built adjoining structures. Once temporarily revealed, they are often hidden again when construction of the new adjoining building continues. “Ghost signs” that endure are often kept for their nostalgic appeal (or due to the indifference of the building’s owner).

Usage | “Did you see that cool ghost sign that just appeared in the alley off of Gore Street?”
