The GOODS from Eastside Flea

Vancouver, BC | After months of plotting our new non-profit organization, we’re finally ready for a launch party! On March 31st we will be teaming up with the folks from ‘Untitled’ to celebrate the beginning of EVACS with a massive art show in the Ellis Building, featuring 20 local artists working across many different mediums!

The East Van Arts & Culture Society is designed to encourage and support the growth and development of local Vancouver artists and makers. A multifacted organization, the non-profit will host accessible workshops, art shows, networking nights, speaker series, demonstrations and more.

Our home is the beautiful heritage space at 1024 Main Street, The Ellis Building, but we will be popping up all around Vancouver so keep your eyes peeled for us this Summer!

Curator’s statement for Dream Manifestation Theory | We all go somewhere during a night’s slumber, an afternoon cat nap, when we are born and when we die. This place that we go exists outside of reality and outside of the physical world in which we live. While we may all go to this ‘other place’, each one of our dream states are unique to the individual. Often we may not remember our dreams but they have come from and exist within us. Our dreams are affected by our personal lives as much as they affect our living reality. Dreams are commonly forgotten shortly after we awaken, making them seemingly non-existent past the individual experience of them. Sigmund Freud, taught of dreams in the context of reality. Manifest content of dreams is a term that describes the visual narrative of the dream – the storytelling of what what the dream looked like inside of the mind. In this exhibit, Dream Manifestation Theory, participating artists share something of their personal, individual dream experiences. Representing the individual dream states in a public space and sharing in them with others is our activation of Dream Manifestation Theory.

ABOUT THE EASTSIDE FLEA

eastside-flea-20160521-034

The Eastside Flea is a modern-day flea market hosting a wide-range of curated goods from vintage clothing and one of a kind collectibles to a diverse array of locally handmade goods, artisanal foods, plants, services and more! It’s a blend of swap meet, craft fair and summer festival that we’ve put our own spin on by adding food trucks, deejays, pool, pinball, artisan showrooms and events. Our home is the beloved Ellis Building, centrally located close to public transit hubs at 1024 Main Street. Built in 1907, this beautiful, charming heritage landmark is the perfect match for “The Flea” and all of the eclectic goods we see come through.

Our ultimate goal is to provide an accessible economic platform for local artists, makers, and collectors to test, build and grow their small businesses. We see ourselves not only as a fun weekend hangout spot but as small business incubators in a city where shop space and overhead make it almost impossible to open brick and mortar stores. Through this we also aim to promote sustainable shopping habits in our community, introducing the public to Vancouver’s makers and collectors and encouraging them to shop local, all the while having fun!

ACCOLADES

“ I try to never miss a flea! New vendors all the time, seasonally themed beverages, food trucks, great prices on vintage and a cozy welcoming atmosphere. My house is slowly turning into a collection of things found at the flea.” Karly P. (Patron)

“ This is my favourite place to go on the weekends. The vendors are always new and different. The atmosphere is great. I bring my dog and we hangout… eat doughnuts and buy art off locals from our community. I love you east side flea.” John A. (Patron)

“I can’t imagine a better place to call my second home, my creative true north, surrounded by an amazing, supportive community of fellow friends & weirdos slinging our goods.”
