Toni Erdmann

Hailed by critics as one of the best films of 2016 and my personal favourite, ‘Toni Erdmann’ is Maren Ade’s celebrated third feature. It tells the tale of an uptight, corporate workaholic and her mischievous father who dons a bad Fabio wig and fake teeth to adopt the persona of “Toni Erdmann” in an elaborate subterfuge to prank her daughter back to her former, less banal self. Though the thought of a German, humanist comedy with a runtime of over 2 hours sounds like oxymoronic, ‘Toni Erdmann’ is a cripplingly hilarious observation on an upwardly mobile woman in a neoliberal, corporate world. As a bonus, it also has THE BEST rendition of Whitney Huston’s “Greatest Love of All”.

I Am Not Your Negro

James Baldwin is a novelist, playwright, essayist and a significant voice of the 20th century. ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ is Raoul Peck’s posthumous exploration of James Baldwin’s unfinished final work about Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. What blooms from Peck’s exploration transcends Baldwin as a subject. Together through Baldwin’s written word and archival interview, they blow Black History wide open. The result is a powerful, hydra-headed documentary about American history, civil rights and the politics of race. With February being Black History Month, there is no better time to catch this film at the Vancity Theatre.

Do Not Resist

In a year of protest, ‘Do Not Resist’ sheds light on the shocking militarization of police forces in the United States. This look at the problematic state of policing in America, puts director Craig Atkison in ride-alongs with geared up SWAT teams and in the middle of intense Senate Hearings. ‘Do Not Resist’ is a very timely documentary that explores, in broad strokes, the disturbing evolution of law enforcement.
