Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

inside

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week, from our calendar to yours!

OFFSHORE | We’re digging the look of award-winning photographer and local architect Rui NunesFloating Topographies and are looking forward to hitting the TeeKay Gallery at the Vancouver Maritime Museum to check out his exhibition of recent works. As explained by the museum: “Offshore is a series is an ongoing catalog of the ships that pass into the Port of Vancouver. As seen from above, these fantastically detailed photographs (many are 2 metres in length) reveal the vast scale of these manmade landscapes”. You really have to see them in person. If you can’t make the opening reception, don’t fret. This show runs untl January 3rd, 2017.
Thu, Oct. 13 (Opening) | 5:30-7:30pm | Vancouver Maritime Museum (1905 Ogden Ave) | DETAILS

COMMUNITY | Sam Sullivan’s Public Salon: Inspiring Ideas goes down at the Playhouse this Thursday night. It’s sort of like a Pecha Kucha night, only it’s not. The deal is that you listen to a line-up of cool/interesting people for a handful of minutes each on the subjects that they’re passionate about. It’s a fast-paced evening of ideas and experiences from people who are making a difference in Vancouver. Expect a wide range of speakers including (but not limited to) consumer-culture forecaster David Allison, experience designer Paul Conder, wine educator DJ Kearney, physicist & astronomer Howard Trottier and karaoke therapist Heather Watson. A special end of the evening treat will involve a irreverent Dessert Menu Reading Competition featuring industry veterans Jenna Briscoe, Neil Ingram, and Michel Durocher, which will be judged by Scout’s own Andrew Morrison.
Thu, Oct. 13 | 7:30-9pm | Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St.) | $30 | DETAILS

FLASHBACK | The Museum of Vancouver launches Vancouver in the Seventies this week. Drawing from The Vancouver Sun’s photographic archives and the museum’s own collection, the exhibition takes a look at politics, protesting, economic prosperity, and the beginnings of a unique cultural identity with the ultimate aim of engaging Vancouverites to think about the future of their city through the lens of the past.
Now –Feb. 26, 2017 | Various times | 1100 Chestnut St. | $15 | DETAILS

APPLES | One of the sure signs that Fall is officially in full swing is the annual UBC Apple Festival, and it’s happening this weekend. Join throngs of happy, apple-loving Vancouverites at the UBC Botanical Gardens this weekend and get into the spirit! Not only will there be apples galore, but you can also expect apple pie, hot apple cider, caramel apples, apple chips, and organic BC apple juice. Master Gardeners will be available to discuss apple-tree related gardening issues and pest management with those of you who have trees at home. Bonus: there will be trees to take home and plant! This is not a light traffic event, so consider alternative modes of transport and wear your rain slicker just in case.
Oct. 15 + 16 | 11am to 4pm | UBC Botanical Garden | $5 (kids free) | DETAILS

BIBLIOPHILES | The Vancouver Art/Book Fair goes down this weekend. Head to the Vancouver Art Gallery Annex to check out artist-produced books, magazines and all manner of printed ephemera. This show will feature small runs of locally published books, chapbook, magazines, zines and printed ephemera. We’re talking somewhere in the range of 100 artists and publishers, so there’ll be a considerable amount of creativity to appreciate, as well as a series of readings, panels and installations.
Oct. 14-16 | Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby St.) | DETAILS

RIPE | Take full advantage of the autumnal window to slow down and eat. Nobody knows local better than the Farmers Market peeps and this Sunday they’re gathering a contingent of fine Vancouver chefs including Ned Bell (Chefs for Oceans), Quang Dang (West), Meeru Dhalwala (Vij’s/Rangoli), Deniz Tarakcioglu (Café Medina), Ryan Reed (Nomad), Karen McAthy (Blue Heron Creamery), Shelome Bouvette (Chicha) and Clement Chan (Torafuku) to play with some outstanding ingredients from local farms and producers. Together, they will present Ripe attendees with a series of unique booths offering tastes that are emblematic of the harvest season. Funds raised will support Farmers Market operations and programming, with a special focus on its Fresh to Families Project (a fresh food program benefiting low-income families in Vancouver). Get in on it!
Sun, Oct. 16 | 5:30-8pm | Roundhouse Community Centre | $85 (kids $20) | DETAILS

FILM FEST | This is the last week of the Vancouver International Film Festival. Screenings continue through Friday and there are still some great films to catch. 365+ movies and ancillary events? That’s a lot to process. Thankfully VIFF has a new website that makes navigating screenings, talks and events super easy. You can search by content type, date, series, genre, venue – whatever makes sense to you.

MAKE | Part store, part workshop, Collage Collage encourages imagination and creativity while arming their customers with tools and inspiration to turn both into art. You’ll most often find the bright, book-filled Main Street hub of creativity full of curious children. This week, however, adults are invited to take part in a rad-sounding Sashiko Stitching workshop. The simple hand-sewing technique is traditionally used in Japan to mend and reinforce fabric with beautiful geometric patterns. Leave with an understanding of the basics of Sashiko and a super cool handmade pot holder.
Sat. Oct. 15 | 2-5pm | Collage Collage (3697 Main St) | $90| DETAILS

GET READY | Every year on the last weekend of October a shadowy procession of characters meanders through the streets of East Van. Inspired by Day of the Dead celebrations, The Parade of Lost Souls (Oct 29th) encourages community members to join the procession in costume to remember friends and family members who have departed, and celebrate life as they wander through dark streets enjoying pop-up performances, live music and art installations. This Sunday you can prepare for it by rolling up your sleeves at a workshop that’ll help you make a ‘creepy creature’ felted mask in advance.
Sun, Oct. 16 | noon | Britannia Centre (1661 Napier St.) | $10 | DETAILS

WHISTLER | Pack a bag and hit the Sea-To-Sky for Whistler and the Whistler Writers’ Festival. The annual celebration of books and literature goes down at The Fairmont Hotel (in and of itself a pretty nice place to spend some time) and offers inspiring workshops, readings and panels as well as a bunch of spoken word, musical and social events. The added bonuses of scenery and fresh mountain air ain’t so bad either. Seriously, Lost Lake is a stunner this time of year! Get planning.
