Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

fullsizerender-50

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week, from our calendar to yours!

BEETLEJUICE | October is here and the Halloween hype is already picking up steam. Don’t fight it! Jump right in with a screening of Beetlejuice in the unique movie viewing venue that is the old City Morgue. A little popcorn and some Tim Burton magic starring Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton? “Let’s turn on the juice and see what shakes loose!” Folding chairs are provided but moviegoers are encouraged to bring along a comfortable pillow or blanket, presumably as morgues are not known for their cozy feel.
Thu, Oct. 6 | 6:30pm | $10 | Vancouver Police Museum (240 E Cordova St.) | DETAILS

FEAST | Kitchen crews from Hawksworth, Bishop’s, Farmer’s Apprentice, Savio Volpe, Homer Street Café, and Burdock & Co. come together this Thursday for An Evening In The Orchard, a feast in celebration of Sole Food Street Farms. If you’re not familiar, Sole Foods is an urban agriculture project that sees unused land around the city turned into food producing land that not only provides jobs, training, and a community for Vancouverites who suffer from mental illness and struggle with addiction, but also grows top quality produce used by some of our city’s best restaurants. The dinner also marks the launch of Sole Food founder, Michael Ableman’s new book: Street Farm: Growing Food, Jobs, and Hope on the Urban Frontier. In addition to the multi-course feast and fantastic local wines, guests will receive copy of the book. Bonus: proceeds from this event go directly to Sole Food. Menu and details here.
Thu, Oct. 6th | 5-9pm | Sole Farm’s Orchard (Main & Terminal) | $175 | DETAILS

BANDS | Merge is an interdisciplinary, artist-run space hiding at the northeast corner of Clark and Powell. The space is used to promote music, dance, film, comedy, visual art, workshops, lessons, rehearsals, performances, innovation, collaboration and craft. This weekend, the focus is on music with performances by Old Cabin (Whitehorse), Pony Girl (Ottawa) and Parkland (Vancouver). Grab a few pals or swing by solo; the vibe will be mellow and the beer will be cold.
Fri, Oct. 7 | 9:30pm | Merge (NE corner of Clark & Powell) | DETAILS

ART | Hot Art Wet City gallery opens their fourth annual Boobies & Wieners exhibition this weekend. Hustle over to the Main St. space to check out all manner of art (there are well over 25 contributing artists) united under the common theme of male and female bits. In addition to the show proper, Art or Bust pieces (breast casts of nine breast cancer survivors) will be offered up in a silent auction with 100% of funds raised sent to Rethink Breast Cancer. HAWC throws a good reception, so get in there and mingle with artists, their friends and family, other art lovers and a few random people who were walking by and couldn’t help but be drawn to the magic as well (everyone loves a good penis portrait, right?). Boobies & Wieners runs through to Oct. 29th.
Fri, Oct. 7 | 7-11pm | 2206 Main @ 6th | DETAILS

MAKE | If you have kids or feel like borrowing one from someone you know (believe us, they will be eternally grateful to lend you one for a few hours) you might want to hit the cool-sounding Tin Can Lantern workshop at Trout Lake this Saturday. Instructors walk adult/kid teams through making a lantern out of used tin cans using a drill! It’s totally the drill part of the equation that got our attention, as kids and power tools are not a common pairing. We think it’s rad to learn how to properly handle tools at a young age. Instruction, workbenches, tin cans, LED lights and tools will be supplied for only $7.
Sat, Oct. 8 | 9am-noon | $7/person | Trout Lake Community Centre (3360 Victoria Dr) | DETAILS

GIG | Phantogram is in town from New York to play the Commodore on Sunday night and they have that trip-hop, dream-pop, electronica vibe that’ s perfect for the bonus night of a long weekend. Tickets are going fast, so if you want to see the show without the aid of craigslist we suggest you sort yourself out now.
Sun, Oct. 9 | 9:30pm | Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville St) | $35 | DETAILS

MEDIA ARTS | Got a little time on your hands this weekend? How about filling it with two nights of music and visuals programmed in three rooms with installations, drinks and good conversation? Well, the New Forms Festival is on, so all of that is a possibility. This is the 16th year for the media arts festival that explores the convergence of music, media, performance and electronic art. Many good things are planned. Check it out.
Fri + Sat, Oct 7-8 | Various times | 560 Seymour | $35-$75 | DETAILS

LEARN | Not to be a downer, but cold and flu season is on the way. Be preemptive, pick up some medicinal plant knowledge at the West Coast Wild Remedies workshop in Stanley Park and learn how to harvest and use licorice root to make tea and lozenges for sore throats. From The Stanley Park Ecology Society: “Craft your own cures with Yuxweluptun’aat (Lauraleigh) of First Nations descent as she guides us through the medicinal qualities and traditional uses of our native plants…”  Bonus: participants take home their own handmade medicines.
Sat, Oct. 8 | 12-2pm | Stanley Park Dining Pavilion (610 Pipeline Rd.) | $20 | DETAILS

FILM FEST | The Vancouver International Film Festival continues this week, and what a perfect prospect for a long weekend of rain. As always, there will be an impressive and varied line-up of fantastic films from around the world (365 of them to be precise), plus an emphasis on connecting with movie goers through engaging talks and events. VIFF has a new website that makes navigating screenings, talks and events super easy. You can search by content type, date, series, genre, venue – whatever makes sense to you. Still, 365+ movies AND ancillary events? That’s a lot to process. For a curated list of must-sees, have a look at Scout’s Cinema Usher column here.

EAT LOCAL |  Farmers Markets continue to dwindle. Mt. Pleasant rolls out the goods for the last time this season on Sunday. We lose all markets by the end of this month (other than the always appreciated and heavily trafficked Winter Market at Nat Bailey). So get out there and score delicious breads, jams and canned veggies as well as harvest fresh produce like sweet and crunchy carrots, squash and pumpkins. It’s a pretty awesome time of year. Enjoy it while it lasts!
Downtown | Thursdays to Oct 27 | 2-6pm | Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza | DETAILS
Trout Lake | Saturdays to Oct 22 | 9am-2pm | North Parking Lot, John Hendry Park | DETAILS
West End | Saturdays to Oct 22| 9am-2pm | 1100 Block of Comox (across from Nelson Park) | DETAILS
