Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

fullsizerender-47

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week, from our calendar to yours!

FILM FEST | The Vancouver International Film Festival Kicks off this week. This is the 35th year of the festival and things are changing up. As always, there will be an impressive and varied line-up of fantastic films from around the world (365 of them to be precise), plus an emphasis on connecting with movie goers through engaging talks and events. Bonus: VIFF has a new website that makes navigating screenings, talks and events super easy. You can search by content type, date, series, genre, venue – whatever makes sense to you. Still, 365+ movies AND ancillary events? That’s a lot to process. For a curated list of must-sees, have a look at Scout’s Cinema Usher column here.

EAT LOCAL | Farmers Market days start to dwindle this month. The last day to hit the Main Street Market is October 5 and after that we lose all markets by the end of this month (other than the always appreciated and heavily trafficked Winter Market at Nat Bailey). So get out there and score delicious breads, jams and canned veggies as well as harvest fresh produce like sweet and crunchy carrots, squash and pumpkins. It’s a pretty awesome time of year. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Partial proceeds are going to non-profit Inspire Health so you can feel good about stuffing your face with all the Lebanese-inspired food of your dreams. Expect salads of tabbouleh and fattoush, some carrot, lemon pepper hummus, stuffed potato Kibbeh, pulled brisket shawarma and some refreshing mint and orange blossom lemonade or pineapple and rose water soda.

ROVE | On Friday night a handful of Main Street galleries, studios and creative spaces will open their doors for Rove – the collective opening of gallery and studio spaces intended to give the public the opportunity to peak in to the artistic world and gain a sense of artistic process. Attend an opening reception or just float through a studio or two and have some good conversation. Break up your gallery time with a beer at Brassneck or 33 Acres and plan to stay out late to hit the after-party at the Projection Room (2321 Main). Maps identifying participating galleries will be available at Main Street strongholds: Hot Art Wet City, Gene Studios, Kafka’s, Burrard Arts Foundation and The James Black Gallery as well as online at www.roveyvr.com

CITY DRINKS | The Vancouver Heritage Foundation has arranged for an amazing cocktail party-style reception this Friday night that gives attendees the rare opportunity to snoop around portion of one of Vancouver’s most stunning examples of Spanish Colonial architecture, the storied Casa Mia mansion on SW Marine Drive. From VHF: “Built for the Reifel family in 1932, the Ross A. Lort designed home is a fine example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with the special addition of a children’s nursery hand-painted by Disney artists and a lower level ballroom with ties to an impressive list of performers. Tours of parts of the home will be offered during the evening, so if you missed seeing this home on the sold out 2014 Heritage House Tour, now is a great time to enjoy a private look. Imagine the glamour and incredible stories these historic walls hold.” Casa Mia? Now that’s a venue! Extra bonus: silent auction, live music and wine supplied by the Naramata Bench Wineries Association. Proceeds support Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s education programming and your ticket includes a $50 charitable tax receipt, so there!

CHINATOWN | If you’re interested in the path of development and its impact on Chinatown, you might want to clear some time on next week to sit in on Shaping Vancouver 2016: What is the vision for Chinatown? The talk goes down next Wednesday, but you need to register now. From SFU: “Chinatown has been one of the enduring neighbourhoods that define Vancouver. Throughout its history it has provided spaces to live, work, shop and gather. Due to its history it has developed a distinguishable character, rich history as well as culturally and architecturally unique buildings. All of this has been recognized through the creation of a part of Chinatown as a National Historic Site. But as development intensifies, there is alarming concern in the community over the impacts of that development.…” Get in on the conversation by scooping a seat while you still can.
Wed, Oct 5  |  7-9pm | Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre (149 W Hastings St.) | Free but registration is required | DETAILS
